Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan, PhD have completely revised the book that made power meters understandable for amateur and professional cyclists and triathletes.

Power meters have become essential tools for competitive cyclists and triathletes. No training tool can unlock as much speed and endurance as a power meter--for those who understand how to interpret their data. A power meter displays and records exactly how much energy a cyclist expends, which lends unprecedented insight into that rider's abilities and fitness. With the proper baseline data, a cyclist can use a power meter to determine race strategy, pacing, and tactics.

Training and Racing with a Power Meter makes it possible to exploit the incredible usefulness of the power meter by explaining how to profile strengths and weaknesses, measure fitness and fatigue, optimize workouts, time race readiness, and race using power. This new edition:

  • Enables athletes to predict future performance and time peak form
  • Introduces fatigue profiling, a new testing method to pinpoint weaknesses
  • Includes two training plans to raise functional threshold power and time peaks for race day
  • Offers 75 power-based workouts tuned for specific training goals
  • This updated edition also includes new case studies, a full chapter on triathlon training and racing, and improved 2-color charts and tables throughout.

Training and Racing with a Power Meter, will continue to be the definitive guide to the most important training tool ever developed for endurance sports.

From the Back Cover

Power meters are not just for the pros.

As equipment has improved, cyclists and triathletes at all levels are using power meters to unlock speed and endurance. But in order to get the most from the technology, you need to know how to read the feedback.

Training and Racing with a Power Meter shows you how to identify your strengths and target your weaknesses with unbelievable precision. By explaining the universal concepts behind the power graphs, authors Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan will revolutionize the way you train. Begin by determining your power profile, which describes your strengths as a cyclist. Next, assess your fatigue profile to learn how you resist fatigue at 12 different exercise durations. Finally, identify the workouts that will help you build power across the board while eliminating the flat spots that are holding you back.

Allen and Coggan explain how to interpret power, cadence, speed, and heart rate so that you can train optimally for road racing, mountain biking, cyclocross, triathlon, track, or BMX. Knowing how to analyze your power-meter data will enable you to create a seasonlong race schedule that plays to your strengths. Understanding your numbers will also allow you to monitor changes in fitness and precisely time your peak performance.

With more than 65 power-based workouts; case studies of professional, masters, and amateur athletes; and hundreds of charts and graphs, Training and Racing with a Power Meter is the definitive guide you need to get up to speed on cycling's most important technology.

Hunter Allen is an elite-level cycling coach, former professional cyclist, and owner of the Peaks Coaching Group.

Andrew Coggan, PhD, is an exercise physiologist and author of countless articles on effective application of power-meter data.

If you have a power meter you need this book. You won't read it from cover to cover in one go, that isn't really the point of it. Working with a power meter takes time to really master and I am definitely not there yet. For the beginning there are many work outs to just dip into. There are case studies for particular types of riders which for a decent rider will actually be very useful to just follow. If you are using training peaks to log your rides this will really help you to understand the information in front of you and plan for the future. It is also excellent if you want to create your own training plans and understand your results. It won't blow your mind and suddenly make you a better athlete, I think another reviewer has commented that it is really for dipping in and out of as your knowledge grows and you start logging your power files and interpreting the data. It does now in its second addition have an overview of power meters and programs like training peaks, so you could actually purchase prior to purchasing a power meter. Just a thought.

This is quite an amazing book for the Cyclist or Triathlete who is trying to move from fit to being actually fast. Developing consistent speed over any real distance e.g 10kM TT or Olympic Distance Bike race requires an understanding of your Threshold Power. Getting fast up a 5min or better yet 30min climb requires a detailed understanding of the difference between training for Vo2Max and SubThreshold. This book explains the ways to develop these specific fitness goals. I have the Kindle and Paperback version. I felt that the paperback was worth it given the need to flick back and forth. When the book arrived it exceeded my expectations. It is much better as a paperback.

This is an excelleent book for someone like me an x fitness trainer to make sense of the detailed information on power training, at times too detailed too complicated and too much taken from other books
Useful for people in the No very thick book which eventually approaches the basic know how but can be obtained from downloads and user manuals unless you are after more

I have been training with Trainerroad for the last year (and recently bought a stages power meter). This book was recommended by them on their Trainerroad podcast. I wanted to get the most out of the power meter. I have learned a lot of new things from the book - interpretation of data using software (I downloaded the free Golden Cheetah software for my Mac), power profiles, quadrant analysis etc. It also suggests various power based workouts to develop specific areas. I had previously just blindly followed the Trainerroad training plan (which is great for indoor turbo trainer rides) but will use the book to plan structured intervals on my road rides and daily commute.

It goes into quite a lot of scientific/mathematical detail at times but I found that it was not too difficult to follow.
If you have spent the money getting an expensive power meter, I think that this book is an essential buy to enable you to get the most out of it.

In short - a superb book. Very useful information for someone training or racing with a power meter. You need to spend some time reading the book and then investing time in keeping all your riding statistics up to date. This time will be well spent as you will have the knowledge to analyse your data and hopefully optimise your training and racing.

Great structured read that provided all the answers that are randomly discussed post riding and rarely understood by many cyclists. I found the analytical tools important even as a triathlete the principles will make the next few seasons with a power meter rewarding and the training files are perfect. Having the know how isn't enough though and now it's time to just ride....

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Powermeter Textbook
Reviewed in the United States on 13 March 2015
If you have a power meter, you should probably have this book too. The book is approachable to non-technical readers, but include appendices for more technical readers to dive into. The book shows readers how to effectively use a powermeter and to get the most value from their training.

While the authors have a software package that they sell and use throughout the book, they do not hide that other options exist (I felt no need to use their software--there are too many free options). I just wish there was a more technical sequel so that I have a place to go for more detailed info.

5.0 out of 5 stars La "bible" qui devrait accompagner chaque capteur de puissance !
