Training and Racing with a Power Meter, 2nd Ed. Paperback – 13 May 2010
Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan, PhD have completely revised the book that made power meters understandable for amateur and professional cyclists and triathletes.
Power meters have become essential tools for competitive cyclists and triathletes. No training tool can unlock as much speed and endurance as a power meter--for those who understand how to interpret their data. A power meter displays and records exactly how much energy a cyclist expends, which lends unprecedented insight into that rider's abilities and fitness. With the proper baseline data, a cyclist can use a power meter to determine race strategy, pacing, and tactics.
Training and Racing with a Power Meter makes it possible to exploit the incredible usefulness of the power meter by explaining how to profile strengths and weaknesses, measure fitness and fatigue, optimize workouts, time race readiness, and race using power. This new edition:
- Enables athletes to predict future performance and time peak form
- Introduces fatigue profiling, a new testing method to pinpoint weaknesses
- Includes two training plans to raise functional threshold power and time peaks for race day
- Offers 75 power-based workouts tuned for specific training goals
- This updated edition also includes new case studies, a full chapter on triathlon training and racing, and improved 2-color charts and tables throughout.
Training and Racing with a Power Meter, will continue to be the definitive guide to the most important training tool ever developed for endurance sports.

Power meters are not just for the pros.
As equipment has improved, cyclists and triathletes at all levels are using power meters to unlock speed and endurance. But in order to get the most from the technology, you need to know how to read the feedback.
Training and Racing with a Power Meter shows you how to identify your strengths and target your weaknesses with unbelievable precision. By explaining the universal concepts behind the power graphs, authors Hunter Allen and Andrew Coggan will revolutionize the way you train. Begin by determining your power profile, which describes your strengths as a cyclist. Next, assess your fatigue profile to learn how you resist fatigue at 12 different exercise durations. Finally, identify the workouts that will help you build power across the board while eliminating the flat spots that are holding you back.
Allen and Coggan explain how to interpret power, cadence, speed, and heart rate so that you can train optimally for road racing, mountain biking, cyclocross, triathlon, track, or BMX. Knowing how to analyze your power-meter data will enable you to create a seasonlong race schedule that plays to your strengths. Understanding your numbers will also allow you to monitor changes in fitness and precisely time your peak performance.
With more than 65 power-based workouts; case studies of professional, masters, and amateur athletes; and hundreds of charts and graphs, Training and Racing with a Power Meter is the definitive guide you need to get up to speed on cycling's most important technology.

About the authors

Legendary Cycling Coach, Co-Author of “Training & Racing with a Power Meter”, Co – Developer of Training Peaks WKO Software and Founder of Peaks Coaching Group.
Widely known as one of the top experts in the world in coaching endurance athletes using power meters, Hunter Allen’s goal has always been to teach athletes how to maximize their training and racing potential through professional analysis of their power data. This goes hand in hand with his power meter philosophy that a power meter is a tool to help discover an athlete’s true ‘strengths and weakness’, quantitatively assess training improvements, and refine and maximize the focus of their training. “Power Training can add a whole new dimension to your cycling. By using a power meter, you literally have a ‘second by second’ training diary, which allows me as a coach to not only see exactly what you are doing on your rides, but also to plan training using the ‘dose’ and ‘response’ method” , Allen states. Hunter’s power training method has built success at all levels of cycling and endurance sports, training such well known professional & Olympic athletes such as Jeremiah Bishop (Volkswagen-Trek), 2008 US National Champion Mountain Biker, Daniel Lloyd (CerveloTest Team), 2008 Vuelta de Extremadura, Sue Haywood, 2007 World Mountain Bike 24 Champion, Dan Fleeman (CerveloTest Team), 2008 Winner of Tour of Pyrnees and with the 2008 USA Olympic BMX Team.
Hunter is himself a former professional cyclist for Team Navigators and has raced for over 17 years in Europe, South America, U.S. and Canada and has over 40 career victories to his credit. Considered a great all-rounder, he was able to learn a wide variety of race tactics and skill necessary to succeed at the professional level.
Since retiring, Allen has become a USAC Elite Level Cycling Coach and Certified Nutritional Consultant and is a featured presenter for many USA Cycling Seminars. In 1996, he founded The Peaks Coaching Group focused on developed leading edge methods of efficient power training. For the past 10 years, Peaks has been a leader in the industry in the field of power training for endurance cyclist. This unique opportunity has given Hunter the ability to review thousands of power files and racer profiles and develop an “artful science” of power training and coaching. During this time period, he also co-developed Training Peaks WKO+ software and co-authored the book, “Training and Racing with a Power Meter” with Dr. Andrew R. Coggan.
As a coach, he makes sure to look at an athlete’s as a whole person and excels at designing custom programs design to maximize potential. “I believe we are human beings working closely with other human beings , and it’s important that as a coach, I work hard to find your strengths, weaknesses and help you improve your skills then develop a realistic plan that works for life.” He continues, “It’s important that a coach learn as much as he can about you as an athlete and as a person in order to better develop their success plan. I have coached over 400 athletes and I learn something new from each one.”
Hunter holds a B.A. in Economics from Randolph-Macon and lives with family in Bedford, Va with his “super-wife” Kate and three growing children; Thomas, Jack & Susannah. He is also a Certified Yoga and Tai Chi instructor, Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Coach for the Leukemia Society. In his spare time, he enjoys driving and tinkering with fast cars, hunting, and of course cycling!

Andrew R. Coggan, Ph.D., is an internationally-recognized exercise physiologist. He has published numerous scientific articles on a diverse range of topics, ranging from the physiological adaptations to endurance training in healthy young and older persons to the effects of nutritional interventions on cardiac and skeletal muscle function in patients with diabetes or cardiovascular disease. These papers have been cited over 5,000 times in the scientific literature, with 17 of them achieving Citation Classic status (i.e., cited more than 100 times apiece). This research has been supported by over $12 million in external funding.
A national-caliber masters cyclist and former TT record holder, Andrew is also widely recognized as one of the leading experts on the use of power meters in training. He has developed materials on power-based training for USA Cycling's expert coaches manual. His prolific posts to the "wattage" group hosted on Google have also helped many athletes understand the physiology of exercise and training, and more specifically, power meters.
Many of the concepts introduced in this book and featured in the WKO+ software - Normalized Power, Intensity Factor, Training Stress Score, Power Profiling, Quadrant Analysis and the Performance Manager - are the result of Andrew's work with cyclists and coaches. As a result of his contributions in this area, in 2006 he was honored by USA Cycling with their Sport Science Award and named by the US Olympic Committee as one of three Finalists for their Doc Councilman Award.
Dr. Coggan earned his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from the University of Texas and an M.S. in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University. He lives in Ballwin, MO, with his wife, Angela (a former elite national champion track cyclist), and children Madeleine and Gavin.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 August 2017If you have a power meter you need this book. You won't read it from cover to cover in one go, that isn't really the point of it. Working with a power meter takes time to really master and I am definitely not there yet. For the beginning there are many work outs to just dip into. There are case studies for particular types of riders which for a decent rider will actually be very useful to just follow. If you are using training peaks to log your rides this will really help you to understand the information in front of you and plan for the future. It is also excellent if you want to create your own training plans and understand your results. It won't blow your mind and suddenly make you a better athlete, I think another reviewer has commented that it is really for dipping in and out of as your knowledge grows and you start logging your power files and interpreting the data. It does now in its second addition have an overview of power meters and programs like training peaks, so you could actually purchase prior to purchasing a power meter. Just a thought.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 September 2016This is quite an amazing book for the Cyclist or Triathlete who is trying to move from fit to being actually fast. Developing consistent speed over any real distance e.g 10kM TT or Olympic Distance Bike race requires an understanding of your Threshold Power. Getting fast up a 5min or better yet 30min climb requires a detailed understanding of the difference between training for Vo2Max and SubThreshold. This book explains the ways to develop these specific fitness goals. I have the Kindle and Paperback version. I felt that the paperback was worth it given the need to flick back and forth. When the book arrived it exceeded my expectations. It is much better as a paperback.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2010This is an excelleent book for someone like me an x fitness trainer to make sense of the detailed information on power training, at times too detailed too complicated and too much taken from other books
Useful for people in the No very thick book which eventually approaches the basic know how but can be obtained from downloads and user manuals unless you are after more
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2016I have been training with Trainerroad for the last year (and recently bought a stages power meter). This book was recommended by them on their Trainerroad podcast. I wanted to get the most out of the power meter. I have learned a lot of new things from the book - interpretation of data using software (I downloaded the free Golden Cheetah software for my Mac), power profiles, quadrant analysis etc. It also suggests various power based workouts to develop specific areas. I had previously just blindly followed the Trainerroad training plan (which is great for indoor turbo trainer rides) but will use the book to plan structured intervals on my road rides and daily commute.
It goes into quite a lot of scientific/mathematical detail at times but I found that it was not too difficult to follow.
If you have spent the money getting an expensive power meter, I think that this book is an essential buy to enable you to get the most out of it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2016this is a great book for anyone using or considering using a powermeter, it explains in great detail everything you need to know. can be a little daunting in some chapters as it gets very specific and confusing if your not the most experienced in all the tecnical stuff, but overall great book and helped me;.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2013In short - a superb book. Very useful information for someone training or racing with a power meter. You need to spend some time reading the book and then investing time in keeping all your riding statistics up to date. This time will be well spent as you will have the knowledge to analyse your data and hopefully optimise your training and racing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2016Good straight forward delivery & no issues.
Very good book, would recommend if you want to get the most out of using a power meter.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 December 2013If you have a power meter then you really should own a copy of this book, packed with back ground information on power meters and how to use them. With detailed training routines and how to test yourself to get find your functional threshold power which is the basis of all power meter training. Then carry out a power profile to find your strengths and weakness's so design a training program to improve your cycling performance.

Manuel90Reviewed in Italy on 28 December 20165.0 out of 5 stars Consigliato a tutti i ciclisti
ScottReviewed in Australia on 3 September 20175.0 out of 5 stars Knowledge is power
Great structured read that provided all the answers that are randomly discussed post riding and rarely understood by many cyclists. I found the analytical tools important even as a triathlete the principles will make the next few seasons with a power meter rewarding and the training files are perfect. Having the know how isn't enough though and now it's time to just ride....
Ryan BowerReviewed in the United States on 13 March 20155.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Powermeter Textbook
If you have a power meter, you should probably have this book too. The book is approachable to non-technical readers, but include appendices for more technical readers to dive into. The book shows readers how to effectively use a powermeter and to get the most value from their training.
While the authors have a software package that they sell and use throughout the book, they do not hide that other options exist (I felt no need to use their software--there are too many free options). I just wish there was a more technical sequel so that I have a place to go for more detailed info.

MatPCReviewed in France on 28 May 20165.0 out of 5 stars La "bible" qui devrait accompagner chaque capteur de puissance !
