TOP 500 REVIEWERon 16 May 2016
"Trial of Time" is a reasonably good novel (not a comic book) set within the DC Universe. The author, Jeff Mariotte, writes well and has produced a sophisticated story that's intended for adults readers. If you're a fan of novels involving such characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, then I recommend this book. It was published in 2007 as part of a series of novels under the "DC Universe" logo (the others include: 'Last Sons', 'Inheritance', and 'Helltown').

The story concerns three evil sorcerers who have altered the time-line, changing the past - so that the Sun would become red. This means that when baby Kal-El arrives on Earth he never becomes Superman ... and the other super-heroes, inspired by Superman, will never emerge! And so these sorcerers now rule the Earth as despots. From outside the time-stream, the Phantom Stranger visits Clark Kent - telling him that he is really Superman ... traveling into the past, Clark must confront the villains. And, in the process, he remembers the life that was taken from him ... he emerges as the Man of Steel, and must deal with these sorcerers in the Old West before the Sun is altered.

The story draws on several less well known aspects of DC comics - and makes use of minor characters (such as Jason Blood, Felix Faust, Jonah Hex, and Vandal Savage). While some fans will be familiar with these characters, those who known little about the DC Universe won't have heard of many of these ... but that only adds to the originality of the story. It's a good read - and Superman demonstrates his amazing powers as he saves the world!

It was a damn good read. Fun without being stupid - recommend the other titles in this series. Cheap as well!
