Product description

Product Description

Reissue of a 2000 album by the legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson which is dedicated to the places and people of Canada. Peterson leads his regular quartet (Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius, Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and British drummer Martin Drew) with a 24-piece string orchestra under the direction of Michel Legrand, the illustrious French composer, conductor, arranger and pianist.

Personnel: Oscar Peterson - (piano), Ulf Wakenius - (guitar), Niels Henning-Orsted Pedersen - (bass), Martin Drew - (drums), Michel Legrand - (conductor), The Michel Legrand Strings

Peterson recorded the original Canadiana Suite nearly 40 years ago, and several of its movements--notably "Wheatland" and "Hogtown Blues"--would later inspire concert performances of high grandeur. However, Peterson has always eschewed coasting on past glories, and here he offers a new 12-piece celebration of what is now the largest country on earth. It is a splendid musical panorama, yet it transcends its referential significance: no geographical awareness is needed to find the pulsating "The French Fiddler" and "Dancetron" or the more delicate "Newfoundland" and "Lonely Prairie" entirely satisfying. Oscar affords appropriate space to that noble bassist NHØP and the superb Ulf Wakenius on guitar, and his own work is distinguished gracefulness and inimitable élan. Legrand's arrangements are clever but lack penetration, precluding a genuine 3rd Stream collaboration, but even so Trail Of Dreams is one of Peterson's finest latter-day projects, revealing his post-stroke gifts to be virtually undimmed. --Richard Palmer
