Product Description

Product Description

A collection of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn films. 'Woman of the Year' (1942) was the film which united the couple both off screen and on. A high powered political columnist (Hepburn) falls for a lowly sportswriter (Tracy) working on the same paper, even though they are poles aparts socially and intellectually. However, their relationship takes a turn for the worse after they marry, with her unable to adapt to the role of housewife, and him driven to drink by her intransigence. Hepburn won an Oscar for her role. In 'Keeper of the Flame' (1942) a widely-revered politician dies when his car runs off a bridge. Seasoned hack Steve O'Malley (Tracy) begins researching a biography on the man, and, through the revelations of his widow Christine (Hepburn), uncovers a number of dark secrets about him. In 'Adam's Rib' (1949) Tracy and Hepburn team up as a married couple finding themselves on opposite sides of a court case. Whilst in 'Pat and Mike' (1952) Pat Pemberton (Hepburn) is a PE teacher at a southern Californian college, who is persuaded by shady sports promoter Mike Conovan (Tracy) to become a professional athlete. As she flourishes in a number of disciplines, the couple begin to fall in love - although there are plenty of hurdles in the way of their eventual happiness.

The quality of the films is stunning. The pictures could not be sharper. Tracy and Hepburn were made for each other and the chemistry between them is wonderful. The scripts are clever and very witty. It is terrific to to be able take a nostalgic trip back in time when the pace of life was a little slower and simpler but the films are still as entertaining today as the day they were made

Love all these films. Adams Rib is very amusing as is Woman of the Year. In Woman of the Year Katharine Hepburn has phenomenal style. Pat and Mike is also amusing and even though Keeper of the Flame is not rated so well I still loved it! DVD quality also great.

I am in my dotage, I don't recall "Keeper of the Flame", the rest I had seen way way back. The box set itself, truthfully: was a little disappointing. In their day, these films had capacity audiences enthralled at cinemas throughout the land. However, time takes its toll and these have now lost their pulling power: not the modern generations thing. Myself, I enjoyed "Adam's Rib", pick of the bunch with the strongest cast. "Pat and Mike", and "Woman of the Year" were OK: some comedy moments and magnetism. I found "Keeper of the Flame" a waste of my time. Adam's Rib and Woman of the Year were very good copies, Pat and Mike, a little less so. Keeper of the Flame, the B/Ws were a bit harsh and the focus suffered in places.

They don't make 'em like this anymore. Lets be real about this. If you're going to buy a film that was made in 1942 there has to be a reason. In my case it was the actors......Katharine & Spencer. The plot makes no never-mind and the urge to see films that I have not seen for many many years overcame me. I have to resort to buying these kind of films as they rarely (if at all) show them on the zillions of channels available now-a-days. Sheer nostalgia and well worth the purchase.
