Trace were led by Rick Van Der Linden (RIP) brother of Pierre who played drums with the classic line-up of Focus. A Dutch Keyboards,Bass and Drums trio they were obviously based on ELP/The Nice and attempted to `rock up' the classics. The work here is all instrumental, is superbly recorded and features the range of those classic '70's keyboards which will always sound better than anything that can be sampled today. The Bach reworkings are a bit hackneyed and attempting the same piece as Keith Emerson so effortlessly worked into The Nice's `Rondo' is a bit redundant, but the real classic here is the 12 minute `Progression' an original composition that is as good as any at defining Progressive Rock. Pierre Van Der Linden's drumming is as readily identifiable and pleasing as ever, and basically if you're a fan of ELP, Rick Wakeman, Focus and that whole genre then buy without hesitation. If you're not you'll probably still be wondering what a Mellotron is anyway...

I first became aware of Trace through a mid-70s appearance on the 'Old Grey Whistle Test'. I immediately bought the album, and it did not disappoint. The album storms along at a relentless pace with fantastic keyboard wizardry from Rick van der Linden (formerly with Dutch band 'Ekseption')over a driving rhythm from bass and drums. The style is at times baroque (rock versions of Bach etc), and has echoes of Focus at times. If you appreciate Rick Wakeman's "6 Wives.." album, you will love this. The only thing that could be held against it is that it is maybe rather one-paced (fast!), and you feel like you need a lie down by the end of it! This is the first of three albums recorded by the group, and the other two ('Birds' and 'White Ladies') are worth investigation also.
