Review

"A masterpiece...an inventive story-within-a-story with a cast of engaging toy characters" (Marilyn Brocklehurst The Bookseller)

"Summer is a time when toys often get left in the garden overnight - Mini Grey's Toys in Space is a playful take on what might happen to them before morning." (Junior)

"Books We Like August 2012...Children will love this hugely imaginative and appealing story from award-winning picture book creator Mini Grey. The beautifully-laid out pages are packed with details to explore, and Grey's illustrations are full of humour and warmth. Wonderdoll and all the other toys are brilliantly characterised, and any young reader who has ever misplaced a much-loved toy will emphathise with the plight of the unhappy but endearing Hoctopize - and will especially enjoy the story's pleasingly reassuring happy ending." (Booktrust)

"...if playful flights of fancy are your thing then Toys in Space by Mini Grey is another winner. Grey has the rare ability to be at once crystal clear and offbeat. Her beautifully constructed narrative starts with forlorn, frightened toys left out at night in a summer garden. One of them - the scruffy Wonder Doll - cheers them up with an amazing story of a spaceship which turns out to contain hundreds of lost toys, like prisoners of war. Happily we are about to oversee their liberation. The story is illustrated with Grey's inimitable bizarre zest and is absorbing, unpredictable and engaging." (Kate Kellaway The Observer)

"Toys in Space by Mini Grey is our kind of book, all about stories providing comfort, where what is a ‘story’ and what is ‘real life’ become beautifully blurred. It starts with an observation about family life which is tiny but which resonates loudly with us...So a great start – we open Mini‘s latest book and the girls already think it is about our home (or so easily could be)...Without giving away the details, the emotional arc we went through...[was] A perfect journey for a picture book!
As well as the thrilling emotional ride this book takes you on (with just the right amount of nerves for young children), this book scores highly for its adorable cast of characters...Toys in Space is an exciting and heart warming story about losing (and finding) your favourite toy and is bound to delight children far and wide." (Playing by the book blog)

"Toys in Space" by Mini Grey is an interesting book for children that teach them the tidiness with a nice story about the alien who collects found toys.

"Toys in Space" is telling story inside the story - when several toys are left outside one night, the WonderDoll to help them not be scared of darkness, will tell them a tale about several toys been beamed onto an alien ship. Inside the alien is living who collects toys that have been left outside due to hope that by doing that it will eventually find its Cuddles toy.
The toys are worried that all of them will never be able to return home but they will manage to convince the alien to return all the missing toys to their owners. Because all the toys were labelled they were able to return to those who would miss them, but also in the end Cuddles toy will be found as well...

"Toys in Space" is a nice story that teaches children the message that it is important to label your things because in that way even if they will be lost their return will be easily possible.
And also the fact that the toys were frightened because they were left alone in the dark is a convenient argument for children to remember check every night their toys if they are stored so as not for them to experience the same fate.

"Toys in Space" has nice illustrations, that together with a bit unusual story and setting in which the story is happening makes Mini Grey book recommended for kids who love space, stars, or are just a bit untidy.

Mini Grey's wacky stories hit the spot with the children I know. And this one is no exception. My two year old grandson had this one off by heart within a week and 'reads' it at every meal. It sits on the table alongside the sort of household objects children recognise and which grey then transforms into her extraordinary characters. In the case of this tale she takes that eveyday story - toys accidentally left out at night - and sends them off on wonderful space adventures. I think adults are sometimes a little bemused by the appeal she has - but children love her. Great illustrations. Good language. A strong narrative and satisfactory ending. Another hit.

I bought this to read to my year 1 class and without a doubt it was a great success . Mini Grey writes wonderful stories with amazing characters. It would be a fantastic book to use for a teaching sequence as are her other books Traction Man and Egg Drop which we use in school. Love her books, they have wonderful characters and plots and inspiring illustrations. I love the endings of her books too as they leave lots of room for further talk and thinking. Thoroughly recommended.

I didn't actively dislike this book. I just didn't really like it all that much, either. The illustrations are engaging and children will thoroughly enjoy them but I can't help thinking this was story was produced by someone who is more an illustrator than a writer. (Sorry).

A great book for our class space topic with Y2 children. The class loved the different characters and wrote great stories based on them. Great illustrations and a great theme about looking after our important things.
