I have a privet hedge that gets overtaken with brambles by the end of the summer and I was sick of the agony of piercing thorns when trying to clear them so bought these. Yes, the gauntlet style gives excellent protection for your forearms, I'll definitely concede that, but you can't just grab handfuls of brambles with these and expect not to get hurt.
Given the variety of reviews on here from they provide total protection to they provide none at all, is that they very as they're made from leather and probably vary from pair to pair. I read one review stating they were so stiff the review was sure she/he'd be able to move his or her hands in them, whereas mine, I thought, were very supple from the word go.
These are, without doubt, the most effective gardening gloves I've ever had, and give superb protection again nettles and all other non-spikey materials, but, at three times the price of ordinary gardening gloves, so they should. They provide better protection against brambles than cheaper gloves but not as much as I hoped.
I use them for most garden work, from shovelling gravel to cutting back hedges and grubbing up weeds.
I have fairly slim, medium-sized hands, but paid attention to the other reviews and bought the 'large' size - and they're fine for me. A little bit big, perhaps, but I think the 'medium' would certainly have been too small.
As far as protection is concerned, I've been doing a lot of bramble work clearance and the thorn protection is fairly good. You can grab handfuls of all but the most savage lengths and as long as you don't squeeze too hard, avoid skin punctures. The gauntlet collars do their job well.
I wear an old jumper which protects the rest of my arms adequately and, most importantly, a mesh face visor, which I'd say is essential for anybody working with appreciably thorny material.
Many reviews have suggested buying a size larger than you would imagine and I would certainly agree. I followed this advice and went for a large over the medium I'd normally go for, and they fitted perfectly.
