I saw this film in the seventies in a french movie theater for the first time. I didn't like it so much at this time (I was 18 years old). The french title was "La tour du Diable" which means "The tower of the Devil". I saw this film for the second time this week and I was surprised, because I like this movie much more today. It's a good mix of blood and nudity (girls are pretty nice here). Atmosphere is creepy and there's a good suspense during 90 minutes. If you are a fan of horror movies from the seventies, you will like this flick. It's not a masterpiece, but a well done entertainment. More than 30 years later, I really enjoy this movie. The print is in a good shape. I recommand this DVD.

1972’s Tower Of Evil, also known as Horror On Snape Island and then later as Beyond The Fog (to cash in on the success of Carpenter’s movie), begins with a fantastic scene in which the father and son team of John (George Coulouris) and Hamp Gurney (Jack Watson) take their rickety old boat ashore and set about exploring a creepy island enshrouded in fog. They come across an old lighthouse tower and after poking about discover three naked corpses, one of which is missing its head. The only survivor of what appears to be a massacre is Penny (Candace Glendenning), who runs out of her hiding place naked, screaming, and brandishing a very big knife which she uses to stab John to death on the spot.

From here we cut to a hospital where Dr. Simpson (Anthony Valentine) tries to use some sort of wacky hypnotherapy to pick through Penny’s memories and find out the truth about what happened in the tower. Through flashback scenes we see two teenage couples arrive on Snape Island, to party and have sex, but not for long as they start to get victimized by an unseen killer who disposes the victims with an axe. Meanwhile, a museum director named Laurence Bakewell (Dennis Price) puts together a team to head to that very same island in hopes of discovering the burial ground and potential treasures left behind by a Phoenician king. Consisting of four archeologists – Adam Masters (Mark Edwards), Rose Mason (Jill Haworth), Nora Winthrop (Anna Palk) and Dan Winthrop (Derek Fowlds) and a tough guy detective named Evan Brent (Byrant Haliday). Just to put the record straight before I get into the review proper, this American import Blu ray from Scorpion is completely region free and playable on all BD players worldwide unlike what one of the other reviewers believed so order in confidence.
Tower Of Evil was made at a time when relaxed censorship allowed filmakers the opportunity to inject heavy doses of sex and violence into movies making the horror pictures of the 50s and 60s almost quaint in comparison. Often thought of as a forerunner to the slasher films that would take the horror genre by storm throughout the 70s and 80, Tower Of Evil also predates Bob Clarkes Black Christmas and John Carpenters iconic Halloween. Originally released as The Horror On Snape Island in America(a title I actually prefer), Tower Of Evil starts out with a bang as we are introduced to the foreboding and seemingly uninhabited Snape Island, a lifeless fog enshrouded lump of rock jutting out of an unnamed sea. Enter a fisherman and his son Hamp(Jack Watson of Peeping Tom and Wild Geese) who for reasons unknown land on Snape only to be confronted by a murder scene with mutilated bodies littering the rocky surfaces of the island. What is also strange is that the victims appear to have been bumped off by a killer who uses a valuable Phoenician sword. The fisherman manage to find a survivor of the atrocity only for the naked and totally delerious young girl to kill the father believing her would-be rescuers to be the protagonist who offed her friends. Enter a team of archaeologists who are rightly impressed by the murder weapon used in the massacre. They travel to Snape Island along with Hamp and his young horny hired help Brom believing there to be more untold treasures in the caves beneath the desolate Snape.Read more ›

Tower of Evil is a great film and the Blu-ray transfer is very good, it gets a 4/5

There are some good bonus features including Audio Commentary and Jonathan Rigby visits "The Tower of Evil"

After a young woman is discovered covered in Blood and clutching a golden spear on the remote Snape island, a group of academics head there to investigate when it is revealed the golden spear is an important archaeological discovery that may lead to an ancient tomb and a priceless statue of the ancient god Baal. You would think the group would consider bringing some armed security given the last group to visit got horribly slaughtered (including a small appearance by 70's cheeky chappy Robin Askwith) but instead they head there and throw caution to the wind. Surprise surprise the killers still out and about and the slaughter begins once again.

In spite of its flaws Tower of evil is great fun. Made in 1972 a year after Mario Bava's Bay of blood and two years before Bob Clark's classic Black Christmas, this minor classic was produced by Richard Gordon (Inseminoid, Cat and the Canary, Horror hospital) and directed by Jim O'Connolly (Valley of Gwangi) and predates the slasher film craze by six years. It's a meaty movie with plenty of gore and some nudity as well and is very atmospheric. Horror fans interested in early proto-slasher films could do worse than check this out.

Its part of the Katerina's nightmare theater line of releases and we get another fun intro from Katerina (optional for those that don't like it)and we also get a short featurette thrown in as well. The picture and sound are excellent and the film looks much better than it ever has before.Read more ›
