So here we have it. The second release from this relatively recent new band; Touchstones sees the band push forward with the melodic keyboard orchestrated sound which dominated the first one whilst loosing none of the neo-proressive elements. Direction wise the new album continues to explore the endless boundaries of melodic soundscapes in a deeper vain. As much as I have and will continue to miss the previous discontinued band Sieges even. "Touchstones" stands as a testament to the quality music being produced in such a very ambient and refreshing neo-prog template. I have to say Subsignal are rapidly ascending to the top of the pack with such a tight second offering on top of an already- superbly produced debut effort which no-less includes the band's very original and different songwriting approaches.

The songs largely speak for themselves. Particularly "The size of light on earth" and "wingless" which are both flowing and memorable enterprises. These are comfortably present alongside other excellent creations such as:- Finisterre and the ambitious Embers part 1 cont: Just about everything gracing this CD fits in between the heartily warming and a experimental hard rock in others, just about everything and anything it is possible to squeeze in between the contents of this album from a keyboard has been carefully and sentimentally applied. "Touchstones" ultimately radiates a truly genuine, deep and charismatic sound that could only be achieved by inspired musicians which have been (and currently still are) on top of their game; the results on this CD reflect this.

2011 was no bad year for neo-prog. For fans into the rock side of things we had Pendragon and "Passion", Arena with "The seventh degree of separation" and this; Subsignal and the Touchstones album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Subsignal or Sieges Even? Another Superb Masterpiece! 29 Nov. 2011
By Russ Bellinger - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Just finished listening to this CD for the first time and I can honestly say that I was really amazed at the similarity to the last two Sieges Even CDs (which I love and consider masterpieces). This band is incredible and I wish that more people knew about this band. The lyrics are some of the best I have heard by anyone in recent years and the vocals and harmonies are superb! The musicianship is high-caliber and expertly performed. An all-around fantastic piece of music that I am very proud to have in my collection. My only complaint (and it is minor) is that at least on first listen, that the production was not quite as crystal clear as the Sieges Even work. But if I had heard this band on the radio and had not heard of Subsignal I would have sworn that it was Sieges Even! So fans of the band can pretty much expect the same type of creativity and beauty from this band. I just hope that they get some success as Subsignal! These guys really deserve it! I look forward to becoming more familiar with each song. It is a very learning journey! Just the kind I like! Master songwriters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Touch the Stones 10 Oct. 2011

For their sophomore effort the band has created another lush prog album full of the type of music you would expect from Arno Menses. While I'm not going to go song by song (will let someone else do that) I will say that if you're a fan of their first album, plus a fan of Sieges Even, then this is a must have album. Overall, you will not be disappointed and you should expect some great listening.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUBSIGNAL "Touchstones"..the golden touch... 22 April 2012

SUBSIGNAL "Touchstones"

Amidst the never-ending rain of music bombs that explode here and there at times, I feel lucky that this time I was, again, at the right spot. And what do I mean? I am exactly where I am not sorry, I am not sad or even enraged when musicians and artists have the knowledge, the experience and the guts to stay at the top, honoring their musical past without sacrificing it at the altar of popularity, fame and comfort. The Dutch-German SUBSIGNAL rightfully belong to those acclaimed musicians.

They respect, above all, their multi-year career and, as a consequence, their audience, their fans. All those, all us, that faithfully follow them from the SIEGES EVEN times. MENSES & STEFFEN, the distinctive twin, in sound and in presence, including members of the equally amazing bands DREAMSCAPE & SUN CAGED, come to spread the last of this year's music carpet.

TOUCHSTONES is the second creation of SUBSIGNAL (2 years after the incredible "Beautiful & Monstrous") and they must be truly proud, as even the slightest doubts, that possibly existed during their start, now simply totally vanished. Yet another amazing album came to stay; it is of the kind that you want to listen to over and over again. Without exaggerations, without decorations that distract your attention. A story of a lifetime, of experiences, of the years that have passed, along with any mistakes and the price being paid for them. Of the years that will come, bringing hopes and dreams different from those that passed. Revealing hidden thoughts and feelings, letting them become lyrics, poems, maybe even messages, along with the music.

A masterpiece of this level is simple and plain, from its visual presentation , there is no need for "overloading", to its lyrics and music. 12 wonderful compositions - "Feeding Utopia", "My Sanctuary", "Echoes In Eternity", "The Size of Light On Earth", "As Dreams Are Made On", "Wingless", "Finisterre", "The Essence Called Mind", "The Lifespan of a Glimpse", "Embers- Pt1 Your Secret is Safe With Me", "Touchstones", "Con Todas Las Palabras"- which I dare to say for yet another time, how they bring back memories, the good old times of the '80s and '90s. Without copying, without mimicking, but always with their own characteristics, loud sounds, intense rhythms, even more than in "Beautiful & Monstrous", double sweet melodic vocals, and with guide in this vocal feast - I dare to say - the unique voice of the Dutchman with the characteristic "cap-hat", ARNO MENSES, exactly that same range that once created SIEGES EVEN, a name that stayed in history. All combined, the vocals of MENSES, the exceptional riffs of M.STEFFEN, which I can say are a lot more liberated, faster and yes.., more metal, a fact that made me smile with joy from even the first hearing. Drummer, Bassist & keyboardist, the rest of the pieces of the SUBSIGNAL puzzle, that without their participation this masterpiece would just be something different.

The presence of the eternal kid here, Kristian Kohlmannslehner ( Kohlekeller Studio ), in the production of the album that places it among the strongest and most notable productions. Gorgeous artwork digipack, filled with awesome brown shadings, red colors with inscribed logo, so simple and so well-planned. It's of the few times that I didn't bother to thorough describe every single track of the album because I simply didn't want to wrong any of them. It's a continuous "climaxing" invasion of intense sounds as well as feelings. A masterpiece that, with its bitter-sweetness and at the same time with its sense of optimism, its innovative compositions, the sensational background and the truly progressive sounds, take you to a trip to their "somewhere". "Feeding Utopia", "Echoes In Eternity", "Wingless"," The Lifespan Of A Glimpse", they all belong to my favorites. "Touchstones" on the other hand I adore, because, that simply, some albums deserve to shine, get credit and travel all over the world.

"out there must be something / out there must be someone / we will reach the summit with our boulder someday" (touchstones 2011)

5.0 out of 5 stars Very, very good album 28 Oct. 2011
By David Torralba Campos - Published on
Format: Audio CD
This cd is great, very, very good. I like more the hard part of progressive music(and with the term progressive I do not mean the last two works of SYMPHONY X),but this cd is not very hard but it is incredible . Mixed progressive metal parts with other parts very melodic and beautiful, with an amazing chorus work. Nothing is missing, it is almost perfect. The production is very good and very clean, letting us hear all the great music that they offer us in this work.I think the best song is FINISTERRE,but all the songs could be.This cd is great, great and great. RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!
