His highlighting of the role of the brain's microglia in predisposing patients' bodies and emotions to over-react to seeming small new traumas is fascinating. What the patient needs is a 'Real Doctor, ' exemplified here in Dr. Kaplan's essential book for patients and physicians. Read and heed his outstanding advice.--C. As a person with ME/CFS, and a researcher of this illness, I am instantly skeptical of any book promising Total Recovery. How wrong can you be... This book is an account of Dr. Kaplan's qualifications, both in conventional and alternative medicine, and his determination to find the complex solutions which his patients' complex disorders require. Disillusioned with neurology, and its technical expertise in diagnosing conditions for which it has no treatments to offer, he instead studied general medicine, as well as acupuncture. He has gathered a team around him who can address the multiple aspects of medical problems presenting as intractable pain and/or intractable depression. His researches have led him to three important keys: the microglia, the part of the immune system designed to protect our central nervous system, the nature of inflammation, and the importance of the gut, which contains much of the immune system, produces as many of certain neurotransmitters as the brain, and also responds to challenges with inflammation. Traditional medicine looks for one cause, one pathogen and/or just goes as far as treating symptoms. Patients with complex, many-symptom, variable problems are traditionally dismissed as psychiatric cases - hysteria, conversion disorders, somatoform disorders - the psychiatrists are even trying to create a new syndrome - bodily distress disorder - all of these requiring the current psychiatric catch-all treatments - Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Graded Exercise Therapy, the latter of which is extremely damaging to people who have ME/CFS. More names include functional neurological disorder, used by neurologists to conceal from patients the fact that they don't believe there is any physical problem, and the best of all - MUS...Read more ›
