Great for media/games, not for sophisticated tech work

The graphics, sound, and performance are great. If you use sophisticated code editors like vim, the lack of registration of key presses will be the source of neverending frustration. Big snafus can happen if you're accustomed to working quickly through a series of key strokes rather than using the GUI, but key strokes routinely don't register on a random bases. If you don't do that kind of thing, you can't go wrong with this laptop. However, if you do, you might want to find a model that is good for the keyboard interaction (I haven't found a good way to vet for that characteristic, though). Another related point is the large touchpad -- great if you use the pointer a lot, but not if you rely on the key board. It's too easy for contact to register on the touchpad unintentionally, changing the focus as you're trying to quickly operate via keystrokes. Some serious mistakes can happen as a result.

I liked the laptop .. have been using it since the last 2 months...
its certainly not portable is on the heavier side. lots of unnecessary toshiba software has been installed.... one small but important issue is with the size of the space bar... i find it small when i am typing ....

on the positive note ... i liked the display its clear and crip .... absolutely wonderful sounds quality and the best bargain is the number of interfaces that we get with the laptop ...

worth a buy is portability is not an issue for someone .... more a desktop replacement ...

First Toshiba-For Work, Rest and Play

I recently purchased the Toshiba Satellite A660-1DW from Amazon just before Christmas 2010, after having had my previous laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo) since Summer 2006 just before I started University. My how the technology of laptops has advanced in just a few years!

I bought the Toshiba Satellite A660-1DW as I was looking for a laptop which would be suitable for work (I do a lot of working from home after Office Hours) as well as for films, music and games. With it's Intel Core i3 processor and 4GB RAM, the laptop runs impressively well even when running multiple programs. There is plenty of storage (500GB) which is more than enough for the average user (if you have lots of video/music files you may wish to invest in an external hard drive).

The screen size is 16" widescreen which does not appear to be a common size (most seem to go 15.6") but I find it perfect for viewing most files and websites, but keeping the laptop at a size which makes it very portable.

The Battery life seems pretty good so far and it comes with a Toshiba ECO Utility setting to help reduce power consumption. There are a number of other Toshiba utilities built in, although not all of these are of particular use to most users.

The speakers output a good quality of sound, much clearer than the tinny sounds which are found from a lot of machines.

In summary, this latop is a fantastic piece of kit with a reasonable price tag (Amazon also delivered it before it's dispatch date during the Christmas period, fantastic service!). Some nice touches are the HDMI port, Harman/kardon speakers and Microsoft Office 2010 starter built in.

One important thing to note however is that it does not come with any recovery disks (everything is pre-loaded) so I would recommend doing system back-ups as you have to careful depending what the fault is as to whether it is covered by Toshiba, or Microsoft (it depends on if it's classed as a hardware, operating system or software issue).

Fantastic purchase

Ordered this laptop on a Sunday, delivered on Tuesday by standard delivery. Well packaged. Laptop very stylish. Nice matt black finish. Was dubious about the keyboard as keys are quite flush to the casing compared to my old Satellite Pro100 but must admit very easy and responsive. Harmon Kardon speakers very clear ( had these on my last one. Definitely worth the upgrade !! ) Don't, however, expect hifi volume as they are quite small so may need external speakers for high volume levels for gaming or music. Sound quality is very good though. i3 processor is fast and responsive. No major lag in opening programs. Love the new windows7 tool bar at the bottom. Battery life seems good but mostly use on mains so can't comment on max battery life. New drag and stretch option on mouse mat very good ( similar to my iphone, 2 finger zoom etc ) Early days, but so far very impressed. Highly recommended.

Very bad laptop, I wished I never had it. It is very slow and I hated it from day 1. I contact the seller from the very beginning and asked them if this laptop is really new. It started with always being very slow to open and close and send me a message saying that the hard drive will fail soon. Still under warranty, trying to contact Toshiba online is nightmare. You put the product serial number in their support page and everything about your computer is there. Then you go online to report it and the serial this time is not recognised!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Anyway I hate it and I bought an acer computer which is fantastic. I will never buy an electronic from amazon market place again.
