StorE steel has a minimalist and elegant design that comes in three glossy metallic colours. StorE art brings personalisation to the market with a range of different colours and patterns.
As people are increasingly gathering data, photos, videos and music clips, they want to have access to their digital content from the different devices, such as TV sets, laptops, or HiFi systems that they are using. External hard disk drives are an ideal solution to achieving this.
With the new StorE steel and StorE art, Toshiba are again expanding their external hard disk drive family with devices that appeal to the style conscious customers – those who desire high quality, ease of use and a personalised design.
It is the minimalist and elegant design that makes the StorE steel unique. The casing is made up of a glossy, scratch and smudge resistant stainless steel design that is available in three different metallic colours: titanium, silver and gold. Customers can choose between a 1.8’’ and a 2.5’’ hard disk. The 1.8’’ version measures 10.3 cm x 6.3 cm x 1.4 cm and offers a storage capacity up to 160 GB. The 2.5’’ hard disk drive can store up to 500 GB of digital content. Measuring 12.7 cm x 7.8 cm x 1.3 cm it is small enough to fit easily into a laptop carry case. Furthermore the drives are very lightweight, despite their steel casing, and weigh only 120g and 190g respectively. Above all there is no need for an external power supply as StorE steel is powered via USB interface.

Setup was exactly plug and play- no need to consult the manual which I did not bother to wrestle free from the box. The double-headed USB cable provided was not needed with my MacBook, so I am using a standard USB. While there is no mention of Mac compatibility in the product description, I've had the hard drive work easily with several macs.
The hard drive works quietly and fast enough for me (I'm never in a situation where I need a 5 second data transfer or else my cover is blown.)
After one month of use I have no regrets or complaints and would even recommend this hard drive to people I love.
I was looking to upgrade my full external Toshiba hard drive with a new external hard drive. I found this one and saw all the amazing reviews and the product looked very stylish and reasonably priced for a 500GB external hard drive.
My product finally arrived and I opened it from the box carefully as I was eager to use it. As soon as I went to use the product it literally fell apart in my hand exposing the internal components. When you touch the item all of your finger prints are exposed and it looks awful. It was nice that a case was supplied, but even this was damaged. I have no idea why this item is rated 4 1/2. It is definitely not worth the money. If you want a sturdy, stylish, reliable and durable external hard drive then this is not it.
UTTER disappointment Amazon.
When it comes to external storage, reliability is SO essential: if you can't trust your hard drive to store your data and keep working for years to come, what's the point? I'm grateful the Toshiba didn't pack up completely but I'm now going to save everything twice on two separate hard drives (not Toshiba) just to have peace of mind.
However in their pdf manual there is a FAQ which includes the following obfuscation. To the question as to why there is only 465Gb on a 500Gb disk they give an explanation that a kilobyte is 1024 not 1000!!!! I wonder if I were a bridge builder on a contract to build a bridge of 20 metres the people would accept that I had used the duodecimal rather than the decimal system and that's why it didn't reach the other side. We accept a 2litre car may have only 1998ccs, but it is about time the hard disk manufacturers delivered what they say. Incidentally, I recommend reformatting to NTFS, not only does this make it somewhat quicker but also gets rid of the bundled software (and of course the pdf manual.
174 page quick start manual!!!!!!! It's great to know the pouch is a sailtyspussi in Finnish.
First: when I connected it to my Sony laptop (2007 model) it got hibernated my laptop.
This happened several times.
Apart from this it worked well until this month.
Second: when I connected it to my laptop a few month later than I used it for the last,
the laptop did not recognized it and always wanted to format it. I connected it to my second netbook (Acer Aaspire One, 2010 model) and the same happened. Full with my datas, movies, music, photos I could not to copy or download or upload anything on it. Fortunately most of my datas copied on second or back-up devices but not everything. Finally only I could format it and 1/3 of my datas has been lost. Yesterday I sent this rubbish back to amazon, and dissappointed in Toshiba devices. I do not recommend to buy this item!
