The slick, modern and minimalist design of the StorE Steel 2.5 inch external HDD is one of the most elegant products in its class. The stainless steel, unique UV coated, scratch resistant enclosure is further protected by a leather-effect pouch. Coming with a pre-loaded trial version of McAfee Internet Security 2009, it will also keep your data safe.
StorE steel has a minimalist and elegant design that comes in three glossy metallic colours. StorE art brings personalisation to the market with a range of different colours and patterns.
As people are increasingly gathering data, photos, videos and music clips, they want to have access to their digital content from the different devices, such as TV sets, laptops, or HiFi systems that they are using. External hard disk drives are an ideal solution to achieving this.
With the new StorE steel and StorE art, Toshiba are again expanding their external hard disk drive family with devices that appeal to the style conscious customers – those who desire high quality, ease of use and a personalised design.
It is the minimalist and elegant design that makes the StorE steel unique. The casing is made up of a glossy, scratch and smudge resistant stainless steel design that is available in three different metallic colours: titanium, silver and gold. Customers can choose between a 1.8’’ and a 2.5’’ hard disk. The 1.8’’ version measures 10.3 cm x 6.3 cm x 1.4 cm and offers a storage capacity up to 160 GB. The 2.5’’ hard disk drive can store up to 500 GB of digital content. Measuring 12.7 cm x 7.8 cm x 1.3 cm it is small enough to fit easily into a laptop carry case. Furthermore the drives are very lightweight, despite their steel casing, and weigh only 120g and 190g respectively. Above all there is no need for an external power supply as StorE steel is powered via USB interface.

There's no software to worry about for a start - you can just plug it into your USB socket(s) and go. The supplied lead is a bit on the short side (it's only just long enough to suit me) and has a double USB end in case your computer needs two outlets to supply the power. Having said that I've tried it on two desktop PCs and also a laptop computer, and it's managed ok with just the one USB connected on all of them. In operation it works at least as fast as my other external hard drives and is quiet too, and overall I've been very impressed with it. The only slight negative point for me was that it came with a trial version of McAfee already on it, but for those who don't want to use it then that is easily deleted.
The drive works very effectively and it has only required one of the USB leads to power it so far. The fact that it doesn't need any external power is very useful.
The only issue with the drive is that it shows up finger print marks a lot on the surface of the drive, but you can wipe these off with the provided cloth and mine sits in it's case most of the time. And to be fair the iPhone does exactly the same thing!
As like most people I only had to use 1 USB connection on the twin USB lead. I found the Hard drive to be user friendly (plug & play)
When first used, and playing through Windows Media the Windows Media would freeze. I did not know if this was a laptop fault or a Hard drive fault. There is no Toshiba helpline that you can contact for advice. I then found a Toshiba website, that redirected me to another website, that had online computer experts that wanted to charge you for your query.
I then contacted a service department on a UK Toshiba website, sent an email, 3 weeks later still no reply. (Toshiba you could do better!) anyway the freezing now happens only occasionally. The Hard drive comes with some stuff on it that you will not use, but you can delete it.
So I'm generally pleased with the Hard drive & case. The only niggly problem is that every time you pick up the Hard drive you will leave a lot of finger smudges all over it, even though Toshiba claim this will not happen. If that's the case why do they include a polishing cloth with the Hard drive.........
First off, it is simplicity itself. You plug it into a USB slot, wait a minute or so (more or less) for your computer to recognise it, then it's ready to go. You can either drag and drop or use backup software for more complicated backups, then do something else while it's copying the files and that is it. Do make sure you use the safely remove hardware button. It's powered from your pc so less clutter of cables. Really, it's just about idiot-proof unless you forget to use the safely remove etc.
It looks good if you like simplicity which I do. So portable you can slip it in your pocket and forget it's there; it's a small featureless (but for the tiny light and small slot) black box with 'Toshiba' printed on the front, about the weight of a Classic Ipod but flatter, wider, and more solid and it comes with a simple black leather case to protect it.
Any quibbles? Only the teensiest. There are two USB leads but one is a backup in case your pc doesn't provide enough power and it's easy to get the two mixed up. It's also easily solved as only one of them will load it up. The lead itself is quite short so less clutter. The lead is short which is bad depending on where your USB slot is. Mine just about stretches from the top of my pc to the slot.
There is a 175 page manual about the size of the thing itself but you only need to read 5 pages (including pictures)as the rest are in other languages and it comes with a PDF file so once it's installed you can chuck the manual away.
Great. Highly recommended. If you need a 500(465)Gb external hard drive, buy this now.
