It's the cheapest way to watch hi def on a standalone machine. It improves the picture quality of your existing standard definition dvds thanks to the HDMI connection with you HD TV.
You'll find this player priced competitively with upscaling dvd players and for this alone it's worth buying. I was so impressed by this next generation technology that I also bought one for my parents. They adore Planet Earth HD DVD.
Best of all (for me anyway) I recently bought Corel Videostudio 11.5 PLUS (£35 on Amazon) and have been able to burn about 30 mins of HDV footage onto a bog standard DVD-R (about 30p each). The picture quality will blow you away.
Anyone with a Hi Def video camera should purchase the software and this HD DVD player to truly make the most of your home movie video footage and show it off in glorious 1080p.
Here is a chance to experience Hi Def on the cheap and I will use this until Blu Ray players get down to a more reasonable price, and when they sort out the BD format. Most Blu Ray players bar the PS3 are redundant with what will be new format BD disks. Now is not the time to buy a Blu Ray player unless its a PS3, and even a PS3 is not a great BD player itself.

If you DON'T care about High-Def, then this is a *excellent* buy just for the upscaling alone, which gives a near-HD quality to the existing DVD collection which you've spent your hard-earned money on.
As for the 2 HD-DVDs, you can sell them if you wish because there are a lot of people like me looking for firesales.
----------------------------------
If you DO care about High-Def, and your favourite films are out NOW in HD-DVD, then its still worth considering (especially at this insanely cheap price). Again, prices of HD-DVD films are about to drop big-time, so you could build a decent High-Def movie collection for a very cheap price. And while films exclusive to HD-DVD (Transformers for instance) will be re-released on Blue Ray, that won't happen overnight....so why wait????
---------------------------------------------------
Worse case scenario: You've spend £77 (or less) on one of the best upscaling DVD players money can buy.
The colours are amazing as is the clarity and depth of the picture and the quality of the sound when played over the hifi. Even old tv programmes - say more than 20 years old which can be disappointing come up very well indeed in terms of clarity across the whole screen..
Against
1The most disappointing aspect is that the quality of the sound on CDs is nowhere near as good as it is when playing DVDs. Also, the player unlike conventional DVD players has a fan the noise of which becomes noticeable during quiet passages. So the machine is not an adequate substitute for a stand alone CD player.
2 .It does not have some features I have been used to with previous DVD players. For example although Amazon says it has a zoom facility this is not the case - this is ironic as the player provides such a sharp picture that close ups be very good too.
3. It takes a very long time to boot up when you put a disc in.
4. Check the details regarding formats closely - it does not allow one to view JPEGs for example
5 The HD side of things was a bit of a damp squib for this viewer. I was expecting a truly spectacular picture but in reality it was no better than many a recent ordinary DVD. True that there are a lot of higher budget "making of" extras than one is used to but I am not sure I would want to watch any of them a second time as it has to be faced that just because somebody is good at his particular contribution to a film it is no guarantee that he will be a good communicator (or photogenic for that matter) and nobody is likely to say anything out of place in case it affects their chance of getting more work.
Conclusion - Despite being less than bowled over by HD DVDs I am very satisfied with the quality of ordinary DVDs - it means that for the first time in my life I can enjoy picture quality at home which is the equal of the best to be seen in tvs on display in the shops.
The player - Well, films look good in HD DVD. Comes with an HDMI cable and two discs so should be usable immediately for most people. Not sure whether bundling 300 was a good idea since the film is intentionally grainy, but Bourne Supremacy looks very nice. Normal DVDs look pretty good when upscaled.
Minor annoyance is that the disc tray doesn't come out as far as I'd like, and it takes quite a long time to start. Before the system boots fully, not even the eject button works.
