Product received was in a anti static bag with basic bubble wrap to protect it. Upon checking drive found manufacture date to be August 2013. Tested drive on external sata hub - drive kept clicking and clicking. Heads didn't sound right so tested it again on internal cables and same happened. Drive was damaged. Thought I would do a warranty check with toshiba. Toshiba came back saying warranty had expired 22nd August 2016 so almost 2 years ago. Spoke with Amazon whom don't seem bothered that they are shipping old stock. So beware of these drives. You may be lucky.

Barely audible even sitting in my external reader on top of my desktop computer (although it's possible it's just emitting a steady whine above my hearing level, cos I can hear it spin down and up). I'm currently using it as a backup drive, and have written a mere 252GB to it so far according to stats, but it's performed that job well so far in the 9 months I've had it. It's due to shortly be replaced by a 3TB drive, since the sweet point has moved and in today's money I can buy that for twice the price of this, yet get three times the capacity, but I may still pull it into service to replace the old 320GB drive currently installed inside my desktop machine.
I've not been able to test how fast it is yet, since I have it in an enclosure connected to a USB2 port, but it's speedy enough for me. It also runs quite cool - I could only measure a 12 degree increase above ambient after it was on for a couple of hours copying 88GB of data to it just now, and that's inside the small plastic box that is my dustproof HDD caddy with no ventilation, which impressed me.

Seagate - the Fiat of the HDD world - 2 years and the doors fall off!!!
Perhaps the negative reviewers could name and shame the companies selling the bad drives, to see if there is a pattern of bad drives being sent out again and again, and also if any particular company is not packaging correctly. All of mine (so far) have come well padded in a sturdy cardboard box.
At least we Toshiba buyers seem to be more intelligent than most; I read a review for a Samsung tablet giving 1 star because the buyer mistook the mSD slot for a SIM slot!!!
For those who have suffered from poor packaging, here is how ADMI sent mine
Capacity: 3000 GoVerified Purchase
This is my 3rd purchase of Toshiba drives, I currently have 2 churning away in a NAS box, one of which is several years old. This latest will be to replace yet another Seagate drive that is dying.

Good reliable drives (so far), and far better value than the other major brands

The only downside is that it's louder than any other hard drive I've had (which, to be fair, isn't that many) - I'd say it's about three or four times as loud as a WD Blue, for reference. Even through headphones (if nothing's playing), you'll definitely notice when the drive is reading or writing. However, I would still say it's worth it. It's not annoying, although it does take some getting used to, because at first you might think the drive is dying or something.
As a reference, I bought this 17 months ago for £61.95. In that time, it has been powered on for 9,952 hours. It's still going strong with no SMART errors or weird behaviour. With sequential reads of 142 mb/s and sequential writes of 138.9 mb/s (at 62% full), it's a pretty standard speed - almost identical to my 1 TB WD Blue.

It's one of the cheapest 3 TB drives on the market, and does its job well. It's big, and the speed is pretty standard. If you just want something to cram all your files on, this works perfectly, especially if complemented with an SSD for your most used programs and games.

Good value, but quite loud

Easy to set up, just booted from Windows 7 install media and restored my system image from my current 1TB HDD and after a few hours it booted up fine. However the noise level is just too high for me as I sleep in the same room as my PC. The HDD I had in my PC was the same model Toshiba as this new drive but 1TB, that one is almost silent. Both drives say made in China by Toshiba and the model numbers are the same except for a 1 or a 2 respectively, the old one has a Jan 2014 date and the new one Nov 2018.
Maybe its just this particular drive or the 2TB are just louder, I bought a Seagate Barracuda as well to try and the noise level from that is much better but it seems it 'may' not be as robust as its lighter, so reluctantly I went with the Seagate. The 1TB Toshiba I had has been so reliable I wanted to use Toshiba again but the noise is just too much.

Drive supplied was used, not new.
Item listed as brand new. Looked clean. Packaging adequate (Lithium Ion battery box, containing antistatic bagged bare drive, wrapped in bubble wrap) - not great, but acceptable.
Item delivered was used. Dented case, four pre-existing Windows system partitions.
Date code from early 2018.
I haven't retrieved the SMART data yet, but will update when I do.
I would have returned this, but was in an emergency situation to get a very important machine up quickly. Drive works, but for how long? I'm not hopeful, so I installed additional backup measures - realtime file backups, and nightly full disk imaging. Will replace the drive as soon as possible.
