The hard drive itself comes with a wall plug and turns off after a set period of time when it is not being used which will save your electricity bills! Thousands of movies and TV shows later and I still have around 2TB of space left but when the time comes I will not hesitate to purchase another one of these great hard drives!
Runs far too hot for my liking. Over 60ºC. Yes, it's fast,up to 210MB/s read speeds are higher than I expected, but it achieves that partly by spinning at 7200RPM which means it heats up far too much to be in a relatively compact plastic case with almost no useful ventilation. The disk and USB-SATA bridge circuit has a metal shield that sits in front of the ventilation holes you see in the side and bottom of the case. This makes them almost useless, but even if these were on the other side of the case where the drive might breathe more easily they would simply not be sufficient to keep it properly cool. This drive exceeds 60ºC in what I would consider normal operation, and statistics bear out that this is a recipe for early failure. I also have the same drive in a tower PC with a slow spinning fan in front of it and it sits at around 40-42ºC under heavy load, which is much closer to optimal for longevity. It seems to me that the casing of this external is badly designed, clearly designed for cooler 5400RPM drives like the older sub 3TB models Toshiba used to ship in these cases, and badly in need of a redesign with the addition of a fan if Toshiba are going to continue using these 7200RPM drives as USB externals. All in all it seems like a highly capable drive, fairly fast (without getting too bogged down in benchmarking as these are more likely to be used for bulk storage than daily operating task) and capacious for the price, but not the quietest, of course. It spins down with annoying regularity, but this might just save it from cooking itself. If that annoys you, you can use something like NoSleepHD to keep is spinning, but the temps will rise. Reliability, only time will tell, but the temps are not a good starting point. I won't suggest popping the lid off the housing because it will probably invalidate your warranty, but it would make a big difference to the heat build up. Given that Toshiba took on some of Hitachi's manufacturing and tech to move in to the HDD game as a proper manufacturer and not just a re-badger, these drives might have some of that Hitachi reliability in them still, though who knows how much they have changed the recipe. I am hopeful that the drives will last if cooled properly, but skeptical about the heat issue.
So why only four stars? It runs rather hot, there's limited cooling potential in this plastic casing so if you're actually doing something like, I don't know, copying 5TB of data to it for 7 hours or so, it will get VERY hot and this will shorten its lifetime. To be fair, this is true of all USB enclosures these days (the fanless ones anyway), so you pays your money and takes your choice. Ultimately for reliability on heavy used drives you expect to have to put up with fan noise. For occasional use I'm sure the drive will be as reliable as any other (HGST used to make well respected drives before Toshiba bought them, no reason that shouldn't still be the case).
A secondary concern, if this sits in your living space, is that it's a little louder during seek operations than some drives. This is a trade off for its good seek times. (Compare to a WD Black drive and it's just as loud.)
EDIT after 18 months use - still going strong. Enclosure temperatures don't seem to have unsettled it one bit. Still just as fast and no bad sectors or hiccups to report. Ignore the early life failures and the users with dodgy USB ports, Toshiba drives are a good buy and it's good news for everyone they are still going otherwise we would be left with only Seagate and Western Digital as everyone else has already gone bust..
(update after 4 years of use): drive started to overheat and has some sectors reallocated Power On Count: 23010 , Power On Hours: 14690. Not bad, not bad at all for a consumer drive in constant use. But ... the aforementioned Spin Point F3 is still going strong after 7+ years or so. POC 1607, POH 63903
