A useful reminder of how influential the radical press was in the late nineteenth century, and Blatchford in particular especially through the 'Clarion' and 'Merrie England.' He presaged much of the problems for the Labour Party and the left in the twentieth century and even up to to-day: how to mobilise a mass parliamentary party of the left without having convinced the people about the justice of socialist polices.
