About the Author

Gemma James is a USA Today and Amazon bestselling author of a blend of genres, from new adult suspense to dark erotic romance. She loves to explore the darker side of human nature in her fiction, and she’s morbidly curious about anything dark and edgy, from deviant sex to serial killers. Readers have described her stories as being “not for the faint of heart.”

She warns you to heed their words! Her playground isn’t full of rainbows and kittens, though she likes both. She lives in Oregon with her husband and their four children–three rambunctious UFC/wrestling-loving boys and one girl who steals everyone’s attention.

I downloaded this book for 3 reasons. 1 - it was free on kindle. 2 - the story sounded interesting and different to what I normally read and 3 - it was a 4 book series all of which are available. Really big plus as I hate waiting months for a follow on book. Once I started reading it that was it, could not put it down and 2nd book in the series was downloaded even before the first was finished. It might not be every ones cup of tea, in places very explicit, but hey you are warned this at the beginning and as the 1st book is free you have nothing to lose. Well worth the read.

Gemma James pens a dark erotic romance in Torrent, the first book of the Condemned series. I very much enjoyed James’s writing style along with the unique and interesting use of alternating points of view between the protagonists, Alex De Luca and Rafe Mason. Unfortunately, I found the characters in this book unlikable and just didn’t feel their connection.

Alex has had a tough life. Raped by her stepbrother, Zach, as a teenager, Alex is forced by her family to accuse Rafe of the crime instead. After he’s found guilty, Rafe spends eight years in jail. Meanwhile, Alex is repeated abused by her stepbrother, which she never shares with anyone. When Rafe is released, he kidnaps Alex and plans on punishing her for all of his years of suffering. Alex feels that she deserves this punishment because she lied. While I understand the anger that Rafe feels toward Alex, it just doesn’t justify or exempt him from the things that he does to Alex. Throughout, we are to supposed to believe that Rafe and Alex have always had such strong feelings for each other; however, there wasn’t enough background to make that plausible. The sex in Torrent is frequent, intense, and quite graphic— definitely not for the faint of heart. Sometimes, if the plot is compelling, I can overlook characters I don’t particularly like and enjoy the story in some way. I felt the plot was humming along just fine until the ending. I was expecting a cliffhanger, knowing this book is the first in a series, but the final plot device is an all too familiar one that I just dislike.

An enthralling, whirlwind romance, I was up all night!

This thrilling, sensual, twisted love/ hate story will have you on the edge of your seat and on the edge of climax! Gemma James is a talented, sophisticated writer and puts you right there in the moment. The main girl character is relate-able and has a lot of back story, meaning we become very invested in her, we feel her pain and her pleasure. The story is divided, chapter by chapter, between Alex's story and Rafe's story which I usually dislike however it works remarkably well in this story. It also means that men and women alike can become absorbed and aroused in the story!

If you like a sensual, thrilling read then this is perfect! 5 stars from me.

I gave Torrent 3.5 Stars.

After reading the synopsis, I had to read this book. The theme of revenge intrigued me and with it being on the shorter side, I had to dive in.

Alex has suffered at the hands of her stepbrother Zach, for most of her life. After being forced to testify against her teenage crush, Rafe, Alex has reason to be fearful of his revenge after he’s released from prison. Rafe is out for blood after losing eight years of his life because of Alex, his plan is to make her pay like he did, but once he has Alex secluded on his island, the lines definitely begin to blur.

Before I go on, I must say Torrent is crazy! My mind tells me that every page is wrong, I shouldn’t be liking these characters and I certainly shouldn’t be accepting the situation, yet I find myself making excuses for Rafe and Alex and of course, I’m always looking for the HEA route. I don’t know who is more messed up, this book or me?!

Rafe’s treatment of Alex is abhorrent, yes he is fueled by revenge, but she didn’t deserve to be degraded the way she was. Mentally, Alex is already screwed up after years under Zach’s control, so Rafe’s treatment seems like a walk in the park in comparison. One minute I would hate Rafe and then the next, I would be feeling sorry for him. This book spun my head and made me question my morals!

For lovers of dark romance, Torrent will be right up your alley, it’s sinfully good. For me, I was looking for a deeper connection to the writing. I felt avenues were explored but then just dropped. A few key points were highlighted and I felt they would have had a greater impact had they been explored fully.

This was a really quick read, it ends with a twist and it does leave me wanting to read the second book.

I enjoy erotica and BDSM but this didn't do it for me. This is a quick, short read, and Gemma James does have a fluid writing style. The premise of the book appealed but at heart I prefer the story to be about consensual exploration of needs and desires and this one isn't. The lead characters are both damaged by their experiences and histories of abuse. The revenge scenario felt too unreal and the ending was one step too far in terms of credibility. I didn't feel any emotional connection to the characters, they remained characters rather than people and I was left not interested enough to find out what happens next. The story is not concluded in this volume which I do find irritating. I am not against series of books or story arcs running over different volumes, but I feel short-changed when the main story isn't a stand alone book. I know that others have really enjoyed this tale. I didn't.
