About the Author

Dean Murray is a prolific author who has released 20 titles in the last two years across multiple pen names. Dean has more than 250,000 copies of his work currently in circulation and shows no signs of slowing down. Dean started reading seriously in the second grade due to a competition and has spent most of the subsequent three decades lost in other people's worlds. After reading several local libraries more or less dry of sci-fi and fantasy, he started spending more time wandering around worlds of his own creation to avoid the boredom of the 'real' world. Things worsened, or improved depending on your point of view, when he first started experimenting with writing while finishing up his accounting degree. These days Dean has a wonderful wife and two lovely daughters to keep him rather more grounded, but the idea of bringing others along with him as he meets interesting new people in universes nobody else has ever seen tends to drag him back to his computer on a fairly regular basis. Keep up to speed on Dean's latest projects at deanwrites.blogspot.com or follow him on Twitter @Writer_Dean

Torn by Dean Murray could fit into a couple of different genres especially when you take into account it's sister book of Broken. It fits best into YA and paranormal romance. The story follows Alec and his group of shifters in their daily lives as they try to survive the advances of their rival pack led by Brandon. Alec's life is a constant struggle as his pack is weaker just trying to survive while Brandon's is full of sadists that will kill innocents for fun. The most interesting aspect is the way the shifters work. Their are two levels of shifter, the first is where the person changes from human to animal form the second is called a hybrid, which is much more like the werewolves most people are familiar with. Oh and it's not a good idea to call them werewolves to their faces, they don't like it.

Torn and it's sister novel Broken tell the same story through different viewpoints. This book gives a much better look into how the society of the shifter's works, but leaves several things unexplained dealing with Adriana, the new girl in town. Since the town's population is closely monitored and controlled by the two rival clans any questions about the new people can lead to a tip in the power balance and potentially cause fatal trouble to Alec.

The book is well done with the unique spin on shifting being a huge positive in my eyes. Although the paranormal romance isn't really my thing, I was entertained throughout this book. I will say that my understanding and appreciation was magnified after reading Broken as well though. This is a far cry from Dean's Guadel Chronicles though it is still some quality work.

I received this book free because I joined Dean Murray's mailing list.

Finally, a complete book which tells the story from the other perspective. You find out in this book why Alec reacted in certain situations the way he did. You also find out more about the lives of Alec and his shapeshifter family, the Coun'hij, how his mum became the way she is and more importantly the fight between Alec and Brandon from Alec's point of view. You know, I've read this scene twice now from two different points of view and it still takes my breath away!

This is the twin to Broken and as such I would say is more of a 'guy' book. There is lots of violence as the packs fight, there is in-fighting within the packs as some members jostle for ranking. However, as a 'girl' I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

After reading Broken and Torn, I would definitely recommend to any YA, shapeshifter, Twilight fan. I can see this series just getting better and better.

This is one of the books that one would like to read to the end of the series but I somehow find that the length of the individual book is too short. Granted they are cheap but I still feel two of those books could be incorporated in one. I won't be following up with the other books for that reason.
