Tim Ferris

We are huge fans of Tim Ferris. He is one of our VUCA gurus. I was looking forward to his new book “Tools of Titans: The Tactics, Routines, and Habits of Billionaires, Icons, and World-Class Performers”.

Listen to the podcasts instead

Just finished the book and it has been a struggle. Not sure what to make of it. Don’t like the structure, it is self-indulgent in some places, and it is basically a summary of his podcasts, which I would highly recommend you subscribe to those podcasts. If you do that, you don’t need to read the book.

I guess I was hoping for a more accessible way to pick up on the life lessons of the cool dudes and dudettes that Tim Ferris has an opportunity to interview. He likes the shortcuts, hence the 4-hour body and the 4-hour chef, but this book is the opposite of the shortcut.

That doesn’t mean that there are lessons to be learned and I will try to give you a flavour.

Here are some of the key messages and lessons

More than 80% of the interviewees have some form of daily mindfulness or meditation practice
They all focus on 1-2 key strengths and create habits around them. Amplify your strengths.
Big changes can come in small packages, and it is about the consistency of practice. Training. Showing up. Mastery.
You have nothing to fear but fear itself. Rehearse the worst-case scenario” to become more resilient. It is never as bad as the scenarios in your head.
The Ketogenic diet is good for you. So is stretching. Reminds me of "Move, eat, sleep".
Failure is overrated, and the focus should be on long-term success
It is all about doing and movement. Inspiration is for amateurs—the rest of us just show up and get to work. Read "Do!

Disappointed - this is a rehash of the Podcasts, arranged by interviewee rather than thematically.

Unlike Tim's previous books, which were fantastic, substantial, independent works, this is a confusingly organised summary of podcast content.

I quite like this book - it's easy to read and great for dipping in and out. The downside is that the expectation is that you're as rich as Tim and the people whose advice he's peddling, which when you're a normal working person like the majority of us proves difficult to swallow. We're not going to be able to store sets of clothes in lockers in different cities, or buy special milk taken from holy yaks that have been reared in a monastery and only have listened to Enya while being milked slowly infused with the tears of virgins. I'm being facetious but you get the idea

Can't rate this book highly enough - it is broke into sections for health, wealth and wisdom and has troves of helpful nuggets, insights and fresh perspectives from some of the most hardy, successful and intelligent people on the planet- also helpfully presented by the author in a way that enables you to dip in and out of various sections in skip parts that may have less current topical interest, an absolutely valuable addition to any library of the aspiring and curious.

I only had to read Seth Godin Chapter on the power of 10 and I quickly made a list of the 10 people I will show my work to and if they do not approve, I can either make it better or change it completely powerful.

I have more to glean through, hopefully, I will do a video one of these days

Thanks Tim

Your Network is your Net worth.

Tim is blessed with the depth of his connections and I am sure has worked incredibly hard to cultivate and develop them. This book introduces you to an amazing and eclectic group of people. I have been reading it like a menu - dive in randomly and go deeper independently with the people that resonate with you. The diversity of achievements of so many people in Tim's book is a great motivator to go after what interests you.

Unconventional in its format, but that is its charm.

Big fan of Tim Ferriss' other work and this is up there with them. Seperated out into three distnct 'chapters', healthy, wealthy and wise, Tim seeks out experts on the topics for their own personl insight. Perfect holiday read for me although be awae the book is quite large!
