I have three different enclosures like this, all from different sellers... They are all great, but I thought I would add a note regarding some specifics about this particular one which I did not know about before I bought it...

- The on/off switch is pretty handy, you don't realise the benefit of this until you use a drive without it!
- This has some soft padding inside, and comes with another extra stick-on pad to use if your drive is very thin - the one inside is not removable... this becomes relevant if you have a rather thick drive like my Crucial M4 - which is a very tight fit. On the other hand, a drive like the Samsung 840 which is fairly thin, will be a perfect fit in this casing.
- This comes with a standard size USB 3.0 cable - other cases I bought have a standard USB plug on one end, and a USB 3.0 MICRO on the other end, (that one with a little triangular zig in the plug) and this is a bit inconvenient for when you travel as you have to carry around a dedicated cable for that drive.

Overall, this is a solid product, and I would definitely recommend it.

I decided to buy this because of the reviews, mostly due to its reliability people said they had with it, and speed. I originally thought all of these cases, aside from "looks," would essentially be the same, but I read too many complaints about disconnections and speed problems with other enclosures, and people here seemed to be quite happy with this one. I got it today and slipped in a 500GB SATA/300 drive I had, and plugged it in. Worked perfectly. I like the blue LED "bar" on the top, not too bright, but lets you know it's plugged in and being accessed (Ok, I wish it was a "cool" dual-color LED, but that's hardly important.) Now, I was curious about the performance, some people with other enclosures seemed to have significant performance problems with those enclosures. So, I ran some quick tests and this is what I found in case you find this helpful. I used the "CrystalMark" disk speed test, nothing fancy. I ran tests on the same system, first on a USB 2.0 port, then on a USB 3.0 port. The system is a fairly fast, Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, 3.8GHz quad-core i5, with 8GB RAM:

FIRST, I ran it plugged into a USB 2.0 port on my system:

I often `um and ah' about buying slightly pricier gadgets but after buying cheap enclosures for years thinking that I was getting a bargain I decided that I couldn't tolerate the high failure rate that comes from cheap nasty caddy design. After shopping around and reading reviews for the best product I elected on this Inateck enclosure.

Installation is quick and easy, no screws no fuss and you get a backup drive in seconds. The two significant differences from the cheaper caddies that I have bought in the past are that the USB connection for this enclosure is a standard type A at both ends and the build quality is above par. Having a standard Type A connection on the enclosure ensures that the connection is always guaranteed and that the connector won't deteriorate in the same way that the cheap drives with their mini USB connectors have in the past.

Installation is so simple, you slide off the top cover pop your drive in to the SATA connector and close the lid. That is it.

The drive transfer rates are incredible compared the old caddies that I have now discarded, the USB 3.0 interface ensures that data from the installed 640Gb Seagate Momentus (7200rpm) is moved to my SSD in super-fast time, topping out at over 27Mb per second. In the past I was used to this transfer being around 6Mbps so this drive is a massive improvement. Now I can transfer mulitple files at once with no data or speed loss.

Simple, effective and worth the price and then some. If you're not sure what to buy I'll help you, get this one for the simplicity and build quality.

I've also recently chosen the Inateck FE2003 enclosure which requires a little more time with installation but provides the same build quality and durability as this enclosure.

Demo and review of Inateck's external enclosure for HDDs and SSDs. I really like this external enclosure as it is the first time I've had one which is USB 3.0 and doesn't require any fiddling with nuts and bolts. The video shows you how it works, how to connect it properly and how to get the most out of the drive.

* * * UPDATE * * *

Following my previous review, I was contacted by SpringRain. They were very proactive in trying to resolve my complaints about the product. Following some questions to confirm that I was using the product properly (yes, I was) they agreed to send me a replacement. Unfortunately, I did have to chase them for it to be sent, which lost them the fifth star, but when it did arrive, it was as I'd expected it should have been. It's a nice enclosure, lightweight but nicely made and does exactly what you'd expect of it.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This enclosure does the job it is designed to do, but the quality control of the item is what has lost it 2 stars.

I paid a little extra to go for this enclosure over some of it's competitors and I'm a bit disappointed that I did.

The installation of your 2.5" hard drive involves sliding off the top cover of the enclosure; but after I'd inserted the drive and replaced the top cover, it no longer closes fully to line up properly with the lower half of the enclosure.

I've used more force than should be necessary, but still it won't go back to being properly closed. The lid itself is secure and I'm not too concerned that it'll come open of it's own accord. But there is just a small lip (<1mm) at the back (opposite end to the USB socket) end where the lid overhangs the bottom half of the encloisure and this devalues the product for me. I'll probably end up wrapping black electrical tape around the unit just to be sure. Not what you'd expect from one of the more expensive options available.

Connection-wise, it works great and the transfer speed is completely fine.
