HELLO! TONY PARSONS HERE. Thank you visiting my home page on Amazon.
The Max Wolfe series will be busy in 2017 - the third thriller in the series, THE HANGING CLUB, is published in paperback on 23rd February and the fourth hardback - DIE LAST - appears on 6th April.
I think the Max Wolfe books are getting better. That is probably true of any series - you get deeper into the world of your hero, you know him better and like him more. You care more about the characters and you get better at telling their story. All the series authors that I have really loved - from Ian Fleming to George R. R. Martin - have got significantly better as their respective series went on. If the books are not getting better then you should probably be writing something else.
Before I write the first line of any new book, I write a one page outline of the story - and, over the year it takes to write a book, I use this one page as a North Star to guide me in the telling of the story. This is the page I wrote for DIE LAST....
DIE LAST by TONY PARSONS
As dawn breaks on a winter’s day, a refrigerated lorry is found parked in the heart of Chinatown. Inside are twelve young women, all apparently newly dead from hypothermia. But in the cab of the abandoned death truck, DC Max Wolfe of West End Central finds thirteen passports.
Twelve dead illegal passports.
And thirteen passports.
The discovery sends Max Wolfe on his most dangerous investigation yet – who trafficked the dead women? And what has happened to the woman who survived?
The hunt for the missing woman will take Max Wolfe into the dark heart of our world today – the world of human smuggling, mass migration and 21st century slave markets, from the Black Museum at New Scotland Yard to the migrant camps where human flesh is just another commodity, from the penthouses of the super-rich to the shanty-towns of the illegals, a world where the borders are coming down and the blackest forces in history are once again on the rise.
As his daughter Scout struggles with the growing pains of the child of a single father, and as their dog Stan confronts the real possibility of being neutered, the trials of Max Wolfe hold up a mirror to our world today.
And as Max discovers the fate of the woman who fell through the ice, he is forced to ask the question that haunts our time.
What would you do to survive?
DIE LAST is a story about a world on the move - people smugglers, refugee camps, the exploiters of human misery and the desire to make a better life for yourself. DIE LAST is, I hope, a story of our world and our time. But like all the Max Wolfe thrillers, it is also a story about London - the old city of Chinatown and all its secrets, and the 21st century city of the global rich and those who serve them. So DIE LAST is out in hardback in April. I hope you like it!
I know that not every reader buys hardbacks. I did not buy hardbacks until I was in my twenties - and even then it was only about once a year. So if you have been waiting for THE HANGING CLUB - the third in the series - to appear in paperback, it is out in late February. In THE HANGING CLUB a group of vigilantes bring back the death penalty - they roam the city in the middle of a steaming heat wave, hanging men who they believe have been let off far too lightly by the system - a child groomer, a hit-and-run-driver, a heroin addict who mugged a war hero, and a hate preacher who wants to see the black flag of Sharia law flying over 10 Downing Street.
As DC Edie Wren says, "Don't hold your breath."
Both DIE LAST and THE HANGING are of course available here on Amazon.
I am often asked - why did you turn to crime? The answer is that in 2010 I was at a film screening in Soho organised by the director Sam Mendes. Over a glass of wine, Sam told me that his next job was directing the new James Bond movie (the film would of course become the wonderful SKYFALL) and he was rereading all the Ian Fleming 007 books, which he had loved as a child. I thought rereading the Bond books sounded a good way to spend some time and I went home and started working my way through the James Bond books. And by the time I was at the end of the first page of Casino Royale, I was reflecting that it is an incredible achievement for any writer to create a hero that endures for generations - be it James Bond, Sherlock Holmes and Watson, Philip Marlowe, or Jack Reacher. And I knew that i wanted to try to achieve the same thing. The result was Max Wolfe. I very much hope that you will join Max on his adventures.
That's it for now. I hope you will enjoy some - or even all! - of the new stuff.
Thanks for your support. It is greatly appreciated. See you down the line.
