I bought this documentary because I was curious about the German occupation of the Channel Islands after I saw the mini-series "Island at War" last year on TV. Luckily, this DVD was made for Region 0 (meaning that it works in all regions), so I was able to pop it into my American DVD player and view the film with no problem. The shipping to California made my purchase an expensive treat, but it was worth it.

The parts I liked best were the interviews - with the Channel Islanders and the German soldiers who lived on the Islands during the occupation, and the German people who knew Toni and his family. The people seemed friendly and eager to talk about their experiences. The German soldiers were especially fascinating to me since I didn't know a thing about the lives of ordinary German soldiers. (There was something surreal about watching an old German soldier sit in his back yard, with a cow munching in the grass behind him, talking about fighting in the bitter cold at Stalingrad, then getting transferred to the Channel Islands. He said it was like he had died and gone to heaven.)

I also liked the whole premise of the film - a notebook is found in a grandfather's attic and the grandson and his friends set out to find out about the writer of the notebook and what happened to him. It was like a kid's mystery story. And, in the process, you learn about the lives of the British and German people who lived through those times. Their experiences on the Islands were an odd mixture of humanity and brutality. Most of the Germans soldiers were decent but some of the superiors and policies were not. I learned a lot of odd, interesting facts.

I found this DVD extremely interesting, particularly as it tells the story from both sides, including interviews with Toni's (a German soldier) relatives in Germany. Well worth buying as a history of what actually happened in the Channel Islands, which many of us in Britain have no idea.
