I just could not connect with the main characters in this novel, and ultimately it ruined the novel for me. I found the storyline and sub plots to be odd and they lacked anything to pull the reader in. I stopped reading at the 60% mark. This book just isn't for me.

Joel is the owner of a tattoo shop, named Tonic, and he along with the rest of his tattoo artists have agreed to be filmed for reality TV. Joel finds himself immediately drawn to the show's executive producer, Annika, as soon as she walked through the door of his shop.

"She looked like a doll, a cold, beautiful doll that belonged on a shelf where no man should touch her."

At that moment, Joel decides two things about Annika. He wants to make her laugh & he wants to crack her open if it's the last thing he does. They push each other's buttons, while he makes her uncomfortable and drives her nuts. Safe to say their first meeting is interesting.

Annika isn't exactly taken with Joel at first. He makes her feel things she doesn't want to feel.

"I swear, electricity shot up up my arm, down my ribcage and straight between my legs."

She has often been labelled a frigid bitch, a persona which she embraces, using it as a mask to protect herself.

There are moments that you can feel the sexual tension building between the two as they push & pull.

"He was close-too close, not close enough."

But that moment they both finally give into their attraction to one another...

so. damn. HOT!! Wow!

"One breath and I kissed him. It was sweet relief, his lips against mine, lush and firm."

I will be completely honest, it took me a good while to warm to Annika. She came across as cold and very selfish, and I just couldn't connect to her. But the moment she gave in to her desire, my little heart thawed toward her. I loved when she showed who she really was, and not just an ice queen. Joel was...wow! He was hot and bossy. I loved how he wasn't clean cut but a bit rugged.

Reviewed on behalf of A Book Lovers Emporium.

I did enjoy this book, the writing was very good, the story fairly solid which picked up enormously in the second half. I really enjoyed reading about the characters - they were strong and I connected really easily with them.
After a brutal divorce a number of years ago Joel Anderson has hardened up to life and woman. Taking only what he needs from them, none figure in his life much past the one night and then another takes her place. He owns a tattoo shop that is doing well, that is until a production company approaches him about doing a reality TV show about his shop and what happens there every day. When producer Annika Belousov walks in to Joel's shop - tingles tip toe along his spine; she is reserved, serious, tall and a blonde beauty, and likes everything done to perfection - she is the ice queen and Joel makes it his mission to crack that ice; he wants to be the one to melt that icy shell that she portrays so well. Never has a woman affected him so much since his ex-wife, but has Joel taken on more than he can chew and what will be the consequences for them both.
I absolutely loved Joel as a character, he is a big bear of a man, heavily tattooed, bearded and gorgeous, what’s not to love, but underneath he has a soft belly and he has been badly burned in the past. Annika was a different story, I wasn't too keen on her at first but that soon changed when her facade slipped and you see into her heart and soul much more deeply. What I really enjoyed about this book was the way Staci Hart wrote love and sex. She writes it like the most perfect star in the sky, the breathe of fresh air and the sun that heats your body. It is simply a work of art, it takes your breathe away and I was humbled to be reading it. A story to be read, consumed and to be remembered - a must read

Tonic is a standalone romance from Staci Hart, featuring the tattoo shop owner ,Joel Anderson, from her Bad Habits series. Joel agrees to have a TV series filmed following the work in his tattoo shop, the executive producer of the show is Annika. As soon as Joel meets Annika, he is intrigued by her Ice Princess façade, but she is totally unimpressed by him, and even gives him the nickname 'hairy'. Unfortunately though, the heart wants what the heart wants! So, even though Joel is scarred from a previous relationship and Annika is not looking for a man like him anyway, the two cannot ignore the heat and passion igniting between them. But when difficult decisions need to be made, will secrets tear them apart, or will love win out?

I absolutely love Staci Hart's books and Tonic was no different. Joel was so hot and sexy, I'm not surprised Annika melted for him! He was also protective, caring and wore his heart on his sleeve, the perfect alpha male, and it is easy to see why his staff would rally around him. Annika was a complex, but likeable, character. My heart broke for her at times and at others I wanted to scream at her for the decisions she made, but when she showed her softer and more vulnerable side, you could see she was not the cold and calculating person she first portrayed. Joel and Annika were so perfectly matched and I loved their story, I honestly couldn't put it down. Tonic had the perfect amount of sweet, sexy and stormy and it was another fantastic read from Staci Hart.
