A Survivor is Born

When the first ever Tomb Raider game launched in 1996 it was a revolution. Outstanding in terms of graphics, gameplay, and storyline, it changed the way that video games were played and developed forever. Fronting the games assault on the world was the central character, Lara Croft. Lara was also to have an incredible impact, quickly becoming the most recognized and celebrated female action heroine and an icon for the video games industry.

This newest rendition of Tomb Raider explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to the hardened survivor that she would become known as. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold.

It's been a long time coming, the reinvention of the revolutionary franchise that changed the world of gaming, forever.. Having been hooked from the original Tomb Raider, through every episode and change, I was very excited when the game arrived, and it did not disappoint!

It is very different from the original Tomb Raider games, in that Lara and the gaming world she now calls 'home' has evolved into a phenominal place, started be herself back in 96'. If you're an old school Tomb Raider fan, then do not expect to be taken back to your youth! The controls are smooth, the graphics are simply amazing, and the story line makes the game all the more thrilling.

You are not submerged into a world where Lara is already the hardened survivor and Tomb Raider that we all fell for back then, yet a scared young woman who is about to embark on a journey that that turns her into the heroine that we all know and love.

From the off you are learning the initial skills in order to survive the environment around you, that can change without warning, putting you straight into a tough learning curb, that once mastered, will have you reaching places you thought not possible. In addition, as this is not Lara as we know her, the removal of constantly raiding tombs actually brings a welcome change, tombs being optional to raid, as and when you find them. Instead, we are taken on journey accross a mysterious island and the young heroine is pushed into a role she believes herself not cut out for, or really wants.

The Lara Croft Tomb Raider video games have been my favourites for years, from Lara Croft Tomb Raider1 all the way through to Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Underworld, and I have to say with all the hype and waiting for this reboot it has definitely been worth it! This game has a fully fleshed out story, full of adventure, action, drama and suspense at every turn and we really come to understand how Lara becomes who she is.

The survival edition is definitely worth the money. I am a Film student so the Art Book, the multiplayer add-ons etc were all up to a high quality standard and were engaging and interesting to read, watch and listen to and were exactly what I wanted to receive. The delivery came and it was in perfect condition, and for a video game box, it has all been put together with a lot of time, care and consideration about what the fans and general public want.

Crystal Dynamics have worked incredibly hard on this game and they do not dissapoint at all. Whilst the voice actress is a little over-dramatic and slightly annoying, you still connect with the character of Lara, which is helped by all of the other components such as the location, the music and the graphics. Whilst the game does have a linear narrative, the island of Yamatai in all of its beauty is more open world related than previous entries in the series in which the gamer can explore a bit more of each location, unlock secret tombs, locate letters, relics and GPS' which expand the knowledge and history of the Island, its inhabitants, what happened as well as flesh out some of the supporting characters more.

After about ten minutes you are controlling a bruised, battered and very very bloodied Lara. And it's about ten minutes of very detailed cinematics in which you have limited control, but it scarcely has you ready for what is to come.

You don't get a real 'open' world AKA Far Cry 3 and the like, but you do get a game that has learned it's console lessons from FC3, Assassins Creed and maybe even Batman. In fact Far Cry 3 is the one game this Tomb Raider has really learned from, although the areas are more limited and you do get the occasional part which feels like it's on 'rails' - you have a set route to get through and HAVE to do it but I suppose FC3 had a few areas like that too.

You do get some pieces that are strictly pressing the right button at the right time, something I first remember from Resident Evil and actually isn't so much game playing as controlling the cinematics.

So that's the moaning, what are the good bits?

The movement, the graphics, the sound, the combat, the's back like I remember from the PS1, but it's much much better.

Once you have played a few areas you get 'camp fires' that are actually checkpoints and savepoints, and soon you can fast travel to these to collect up any relics, or diary entries or books or whatever you have missed in locations. So at times you can push on and through the adventure, and that is exactly what it feels like - a proper adventure game.

Combat is terrific, you get some slow mo elements that allow you to pick off the toughest bad guys, but often you get the ability to stealth kill which is horribly satisfying!

I've got the other two XBox Tomb Raider games and they are alright more than good, so I never really got round to finishing them.
