Advanced Lane Guidance
Drivers often feel stressed at unfamiliar junctions when there are a lot of lanes to choose from. Advanced lane guidance provides extra clarity to drivers in these circumstances, so they won't miss a turn or have to make a last-minute lane crossing. It works by giving them a still 3D image on the screen that clearly indicates the lane they need to take. So even at the most complex junctions and in the heaviest traffic, drivers can stay relaxed and in control.
Latest Map Guarantee
Sometimes, TomTom releases a new map between the time a device is manufactured and the time someone buys it. So we allow every TomTom customer to check for a new map release within 30 days of first using their device. If one is available, customers simply use the voucher that is included inside the box to download it for free. This is all done via HOME, TomTom's free desktop application, which will automatically recognise a newly connected device and check whether a newer map release is available for it.

Map Share™ Technology
Our research reveals that roads change by as much as 15% every year. That's why we draw upon the largest satellite navigation community in the world – ours. Through our unique Map Share™ technology, drivers can make corrections to their map and benefit from thousands of corrections made by over 40 million TomTom users every day – free of charge.
Over 5 million Map Share™ corrections have been made worldwide to date. Through Map Share™, a driver can: block and unblock a street, reverse traffic direction, edit a street name, change turn restrictions, change road speed, add a missing Point of Interest (POI), edit a POI, and report another error.
Save Time & Money
Drive smarter with the XL LIVE. Not only can you find the best route at any given time, you can save money with information on the lowest local fuel prices, the most economical routes, and more.
It's often helpful to check the radio, TV and internet for traffic news. But most of these sources only give news on the main highways. And that information won't make any difference to route calculation on your device. Our leading HD Traffic™ service, however, gives drivers more detailed updates on more of the roads – live on their TomTom device. Users can view detailed incident reports, estimated delay times and alternative route proposals in an instant. The result? Drivers stay calm and in control, with the most accurate journey durations and arrival times.
Your TomTom device receives the latest fuel prices. Get directions to the cheapest fuel station around and save money on your fuel bill.
IQ Routes™ Technology
Only TomTom uses actual speed data collected from millions of users to calculate the fastest routes at any point in time. Imagine a route that takes into account rush hour, traffic lights, zebra crossings, school exits or even shopping crowds, every minute of every day. That's how smart IQ Routes is!
QuickGPSfix™ speeds up the time it takes to fix your GPS position to help you drive off more quickly.
Update your maps, plan your route, or get involved with the TomTom community - all from the comfort of your own home.
TomTom HOME Desktop Software
We design our devices to be really easy to use and work straight out of the box. But when used with TomTom HOME, they're even better. Following the instructions, I connected it to my laptop, downloaded the software and set about updating. After a lengthy download (big file and slow broadband that day as I was working from home at the same time on another laptop) it completed updating and was ready to go. I programmed in my destination, fitted it in the car, off I went up the A1 and it perfomed faultlessly. All the LIVE services work as advertised and the text to speech for road names & other info is a vast improvement over my old XL device. I was initially worried that the built in suction cup would somehow be a disadvantage, but it's actually a convenience and folds flat against the device for storage.
All in all, I can recommend this device and and very pleased with the purchase.
The only thing I am not sure about, is that at the time of writing, I am not sure which hard case is suitable for this device as they all seem to be made for the older devices, so if anyone has bought a case that works well with the Live 120, please leave a comment and advise since I would find this really helpful.
I really like the live services, and there is one year free included with the device. You can do Google Local Search for details on local hotels and other services. There is also the HD traffic, which, living in a fairly rural part of Ireland, I have not been able to test.
The routes are OK, but sometimes the device offers an alternative route, which may be '2 minutes faster'. Well, in my experience, that is best ignored as it took me down some country roads I'd rather not travel. It also wanted to take me off the main road on foolish detours, and this was with IQ routes switched off. I've had dodgy routes with Garmin too, so it seems this is just part of the deal. Perhaps it is because I'm using in in Ireland.
Anyway, I am happy to recommend this device as an upgrade or for those looking to enter the world of satnavs.
Update: After using the device for over a month now, I can make some additional comments. I find the lack of a 'show map' button VERY annoying. Instead, you have to press the 'back' arrow maybe 3 or 4 times to get out of the sub-menus. That is a major annoyance and inconvenience. I also find that the device is now laggy and slow after updating it on the TomTom website. It used to be quite sharp and responsive; now it is lagging. You press the button and it doesn't register immediately, then you press it again but as you press it you hit a newly appeared button. ARRRGGG!!! These problems mean that I have now removed a star. It's 3 stars from me.
The display is fantastic and is more than big enough to see everything going on and is extremely clear. The unit itself is very slim and has the windscreen mount cleverly built into the back and, for the most part, works very well. The HD services are great, especially the 'HD Traffic' which almost magically seems to know about virtually all the jams/roadworks/tailbacks you'll even encounter and will offer to re-route you accordingly.
Now the not so good...
There is a huge lag when using the touch screen. In real terms, it may only be a fraction of a second but it makes navigating around the OS and setting a journey really irritating. In fact, the entire OS seems really slow; I get that it's doing a lot of work in the background but then TomTom need to put a more powerful CPU in these things to make up for it. I bought this to replace an original TomTom ONE which I've had for about 7 or 8 years and the ONE is much nicer to navigate around. TomTom have made some, er, interesting changes to their GUI which I'm afraid just haven't been for the best. One of the more irritating is that you now have to switch to a different 'number only' keyboard when typing house numbers or the numerical part of a post code...combine this with the slow response I mentioned earlier and it's enough to have you tearing your hair out.
My old TomTom ONE unit took a small, round power input but this has the most convoluted, over-designed power connector I've ever come across. It's essentially a micro-USB connector but they've designed it in such a way that the end from the 12v cigarette adapter cable can only be inserted into the unit at one angle. It's very tricky to connect and depending on which way you have the unit positioned (it can be used any way up, as the GUI will spin around to compensate), means the power cable comes out at a very inconvenient angle and is tricky to move out of the way.
TomTom also seemed to have messed their update system up too. The TomTom HOME software used to be really easy to use and very simple but they've now decided to make it all via a web browser and it just doesn't work anywhere near as well.
Overall, this is a good satnav unit but the flaws are just enough to mean I wouldn't buy this same model again.
