First the positives. The watch looks very nice and modern. I wanted to wear it all the time, initially. The strap is very effective with a strong fixing system. The face looks good too. The HR monitor works very well. It picks in up quickly and seems accurate. The GPS also works well.
The negatives then. The screen is too small to be anything but a compromised. I should have realised this before I bought it. I was sick of the huge size of the 305, but I know realise it needs to be big to be good. When you click through the display options showing ‘pace’, ‘distance’ etc there is no space for a descriptor or even units, so unless you get used to them you aren’t sure what you’re looking at, unlike the 305 that have everything as clear as day.
The single joypad style control of the Tomtom is just nowhere near as good as proper separate buttons. Even the ‘Stop’ control is awkward compared to a simple ‘Stop’ button. So far I have mistakenly not stopped runs on several occasions.
My biggest annoyance is probably the lack of an edit option for runs. There is an option for intervals, but it is the most basic option possible. I cannot make my own runs. I can’t make a run of 1km at one pace followed by a 20 second sprint followed by a 2km jog etc. I assumed that any new watch would have this.
My next biggest utter disappointment is the complete limitation of the running options. I can make 5km run distance but I can only ask for time increments of 1 minute. So I can do a 5km run in 23 minutes or 22 minutes but not 22 minutes 30 seconds, or 15 seconds. I find this insane on a running watch! I don’t improve my times in increments of 1 minute! Totally useless! I have been wearing my 305 at the same time as this hopeless watch because it’s so unsuitable and lacking in functions.
The activity tracker was a novelty for a few days, but I quickly realised it’s pointless to an actual person who does real exercise. Plus it uses the battery much too fast. My advice is if you do regular proper exercise don’t bother with the activity tracker. It’s a fad for folk who don’t do real activity or those who like gimmicky tech.
My overall advice for a runner is do not buy the Tomtom runner 2. Pay the extra and get a Garmin. If I hadn’t already given the box to my kids to mess about with I’d have returned this watch already.
I have used it several times for swim, cycle & run along with a couple of hikes and find the battery life is good, even with the GPS tracking enabled and syncing to Strava is seamless and simple once configured in the account online, I don't use the mobile app much other than for syncing the watch so can't really comment, it just seems to replicate what I'm getting out of Strava.
Swimming was a let down, as it doesn't use GPS to track distance but I think registers when I turn around for "laps" that I can configure the length for, only, when I'm doing an ocean swim between two piers that I don't know the distance apart, how am I supposed to set this? Even when doing laned swimming at the local pool it sometimes doesn't register the turn around - my last such swim counted two lengths less than I'd actually done. Would be nice if you could toggle between this mode and a GPS mode to track swimming (currently I'm using Freestyle and then adjusting in Strava).
In hindsight I think I should've gotten the music version as carrying my phone for tunes seems a little redundant now, especially as I use bluetooth headphones anyway.
Seems good for cycling tracking along with running / trail running, a little bit better than my phone to be honest, the line seems to follow the path better with less sway than the lines drawn by my phone, GPS usually picks up in a few seconds whilst I pre-stretch though I tend to not look at it whilst cycling (bike computer tells me my speed anyway) I find the pace useful for running, to make sure I'm not getting carried away in events and over-exerting myself early on into a half marathon or treading too slowly on a trail run.
Room for improvements:
Nav buttons a bit big, could've been integrated into the sides of the screen, I've used it in the water and still think it's unnecessarily large.
Would be nice to have a selection of displays available from the TomTom app instead of the standard time display on screen.
Step counter appears to be confused with gesticulating, many times I've motioned something to a colleague and it's started to vibrate and congratulate me on hitting my daily target, good job it's on my non-native arm otherwise I'd hit the step target before getting out of bed in a morning.
Strap has room for improvement, the notches seem to be too slack or too tight and spare straps and prohibitively expensive in comparison, like, I thought I'd get a couple to match different outfits but they're twice the price I'd find acceptable.
Mobile app's a little ropey, I only use it for syncing and sometimes it doesn't tell me it is syncing when it is, or say it's finished when it hasn't. but, I guess only a minor gripe as I say, little use, though, I guess that's damning, as it's not enticed me to use it more.
I've only really had a fit bit step counter in this kind of market, so certainly wouldn't say they're in the same league for comparison (though would say the TomTom has both better build quality and software than fit bit who I was massively disappointed with the quality of both). It's certainly better than using my phone.
