Sometimes a new item comes on the market and it completely changes how we do things. I used to have a driving job, and relied on paper maps or if that didn't work phoning the customer for directions which wasn't ideal (or professional).
I first got a tom tom around 10 years ago and I marvelled at their simplistic but intuitive interface. This is the sat nav for dummies. On a recent trip with my 70 year old tehnophobe gran she mastered it in no time at all. Yes, it is not the most cheapest device on the market, but I feel it is the most user friendly.
With all new purchases, you can download the most up to date version of the maps for free, however you need to pay for future upgrades of the maps. In reality though, unless you hugely rely on the most up to date information (which only really affects say delivery drivers). I bought my current device around 4 years ago and haven't upgraded the maps and in this time only been caught out once as the street I was going was still a building site - I'm not convinced if I had the most up to date version whether this would have been any different.
You have several voices to chose from and you can add your own. My favourite is Irish Sean. Whenever friends are in the car they laugh the first time they hear him say 'cross the roundabout' or 'go on', still brings a smile to my face.
Foibles: We have all heard the stories of sat nav's sending people into a river etc. The nearest I came to this was on a trip to Dundee I set it for the nearest cinema. It took me to a secluded wooded area! After a couple of minutes I realised that this wood backed onto the rear of the cinema and as it was brand new, the sat nav was unsure on how to get there!
When you first select your destination check the map that comes up for you, sometimes if you are facing the wrong direction the device will have you go the 'long' way to your destination. It wouldn't be the first time I have entered my destination, to turn the car around and the map re-calibrates and reduces your journey by 2 miles!
99.9% of the time it will take you straight to the door of where you are going, although sometimes it loses the plot and has you 300 yards from the correct door.
You can set it to guide you home, to the city centre of wherever you are going, the address or the postcode. I find myself using the address function, and if I get stuck I switch to the postcode. Just be sure though on this option you chose the correct town as we all know that certain areas have several streets spread across neighbouring towns with the same names - can become confusing. If this happens, switch to postcode. It also has a 'nearest' section which includes pubs, petrol stations, restaurants etc. A great idea if you are visiting an area for the first time.
All in all a quirky item with (small) flaws, but without a doubt the best on the market.
