From the Publisher
Step away from the microwave
“More of us than ever are regularly turning to ready-meals and takeaways. I get why: we’re busy, and convenience food is exactly that - convenient! But relying on it all the time isn’t very good for us.
I’ve learned from experience how important it is to take control over what you eat, for the sake of your health and happiness. Now I want to show you that cooking amazing meals really isn’t as difficult as you might think, with recipes that taste fantastic and will get you having fun in the kitchen.”

Cook together, eat together
‘Cooking and eating is one of the easiest and most pleasurable ways to spend time together, and the benefits go way beyond simply eating higher-quality food.
I want you to get the family involved, whatever ‘family’ might mean to you - whether that’s kids, your partner or housemates. It sounds a bit cheesy, but I truly believe that making a meal to share is one of the best ways to show those around you that you care about them. It strengthen bonds and creates lasting memories.’

The book does include a "Lighter Dishes" section of 13 recipes all around the high 300 to mid 500 calorie mark. However, the remainder of the book's recipes mostly come in at around 600-700+ calories per portion. There are a few Veggie, Dessert and Breakfast dishes that are around mid-200-mid 300 calories and at the end there are some Banana Choc Ices at 140 calories. But as for main courses it was sadly lacking in what I consider "every day" foods. Some of Tom's ingredients are not to my taste, such as Squid and Mussels (are they every day foods?), things I would never eat (but I know I could probably choose something different to replace the squid). He also relies on the strong flavour of Chorizo - another thing I cannot stand!
Clearly Tom Kerridge has to "keep the ideas fresh" in order to promote his TV programmes and continued line of diet books (i.e. The Dopamine Diet, Best Ever Dishes, Pub food etc). Perhaps he and his PR team consider that churning out yet another weight loss book isn't going to keep him and his ideas at the forefront of the many cooking-based TV series out there and pimp his book enough. A new idea and a new theme is what keeps the punters interested and the tills keep ringing. But I bought this book on the back of his Weight Loss Diet thinking we were going to get more of the same - with the words Fresh Start in the title, I (wrongly) thought he had devised a whole new range of low calorie recipes to keep those of us who had done so well on his diet book motivated.
So yes, I am disappointed that Tom has merely jumped on the "whatever brings in the money" bandwagon and has little interest in his reading public or those of us who had religiously followed his Weight Loss Diet and done so well, those of us who were waiting for further inspiration. We are a forgotten Cash Cow, in the past, we don't sell books. I'm angry that after following his diet we now appear to have been cut loose without any further support or ideas. So, if you are looking for anything remotely resembling his Loose Weight for Good, do not bother buying this book. I suspect unlike Loose Weight for Good, this book is going to sit in my cupboard hardly used, but at least it has lined Tom Kerridge's pockets.
PS: In fact after some consideration, I have returned the book and got a refund.
WELL DONE TOM MATE!!!!!
Its a great book which is about knowing whats in your food and taking the time to cook fresh meals, some lower calorie and some not. There is something here for everyone from the easy to the more involved recipes. The recipes ive cooked so far are delicious and i love the sections on batch cooking and more focus on getting veg into your daily eating regime. Some recipes seem to list quite alot of ingredients but if you look properly they are mostly spices and herbs which most of us cooks keep in the cupboard anyway.
Ive earmarked tons of pages and plan to use this book alot for family meals. Love it!
Just to note this isn’t a diet book. The reviewer above is correct that the recipes are around 700-800 calories, but I don’t think this book is about calorie counting. It’s getting you out of the takeaway and back in the kitchen for great family and friends meals
Also only under 5 recipes appealed to me, whereas the previous book is like my cooking bible!
I have given this book away.
Another diet book please Tom.
