With the recent release (and box-office failure) of the fifth Jack Ryan movie: Shadow recruit - following the passable but largely forgotten Ben Affleck-starring Sum of all Fears, it's time to reappraise the first three adaptations Tom Clancy novels adapted for the big screen.

First up is submarine drama: The Hunt for Red October; most notable for starring Sean Connery as a curiously-accented Russian sub commander, and featuring Alec Baldwin for the first and only time as Jack Ryan. Less than riveting, there is some heart here, but for the large part (and despite excellent supporting turns from the likes of Sam Neill and Tim Curry), it is a moribund affair.

Patriot Games saw Harrison Ford take over as the lead, and a heady brew of Irish political intrigue, and London-based terrorist attacks, was a critical and commercial success, paving the way for Ford's return in Clear and Present Danger. The last of the three is a solid thriller, featuring a memorable turn from Willem Defoe as a compromised mercenary, and with the feel of a late-80s James Bond film.

Movies-
The Hunt for Red October- A brand new hi-Tec Russian sub under the command of Captain Marko Ramius, at the height of the cold war is found to be heading towards the U.S Coast. The Russian and American government believes he is going to attack, only C.I.A analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) believes the truth: he is going to defect... I believe that this is the best and most well made of the four Jack Ryan films. Baldwin far surpasses Ford as Jack Ryan, who in the words of a wise friend is typecast waaaay too much. A must see along with the three other movies. -5 out of 5 stars
-Patriot Games- Jack Ryan and his family are just beginning their vacation in London, when a group of terrorists cease a member of the Royal family, almost kill him in cold blood, but Jack is able to same the Lord, and even takes out one of the terrorists. For his courageous act the kill terrorist's brother will stop at nothing to kill him and his family.
Patriot Games is not the masterpiece The Hunt for Red October happens to be but with it interesting plot and exciting climax, it come pretty close. As I said in the first review, Ford is a bit over typecast but it barley takes away from the movie. Another exciting must-see. - 4 and a half out of five.
Clear and Present Danger- Jack Ryan has been put unwillingly into the position of head of the CIA, when the Presidents closest friend is murdered. Ties to the drug lords in Colombia are discovered and a military force is sent to Colombia to fight a secret war against them, this was unknown to Jack and soon he finds himself in the cross fire between corrupt Political leaders and gorilla war forces. This is the worst of the Jack Ryan movies I must admit. Although it was a tricky plot and great acting, it just was not as good.

This DVD boxed set of 4 terrific Tom Clancy Films is not to be missed. Why I hear you cry? Well, not only being terrific value (work it out of the films value seperatly), you also get 4 of the best films in my opinion, complete with new special features that are not avaliable with the individual movies on sale at the moment.
Each film, being based on a Tom Clancy novel, follows the story of a Jack Ryan. Although some of the films are relatively old the stories all remain relevant and as with any Clancy novel, have a terrific plot and capture the audience effectively... these are films you can watch again and again.
Included in this product:
The Sum Of All Fears (2002) Morgan Freeman, Ben Affleck
The Hunt For Red October (1989) Sean Connery
Patriot Games (1991) Harrison Ford
Clear And Present Danger (1994) Harrison Ford
+ Special Features for each film; these consist of a Theatrical Trailer and cast footage about the making of the film etc.

I enjoy all of Tom Clancy's books, so much so I wanted to see how well they would appear on the small screen. Clearly it is best to watch before you read the books as I was simply amazed at just how much was cut having read the books first. Even so in the time allowed for these movies they were still thoroughly enjoyable. Having said that, if they wet your appetite do go on to read the books - You will surprised at their depth and then watch the movie again. 5 STAR all the way.

Having already read (and seen the film!) Red October, I went on to read Clancy's other famous books and was impressed by all of them. His obvious knowledge of the military stands him in great stead for these books and it amazed me how much he could release into the public domain, thus satisfying even the most ardent critic!!
