I already have the essay in another collection of Tolkien's works but not the comments and originals. It is fascinating and Tolkien's comments should not be ignored by students of this subject.

Tolkien's original essay is sometimes hard slogging, because of the wealth of knowledge and references that he includes--but this edition provides all the notes and references a reader might want, plus additional commentary to put Tolkien's essay in context. For any reader who is interested in defining the genre of fantasy, this edition of Tolkien's work is a must.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read! 24 Mar. 2017
By Jeremiah Davis - Published on Amazon.com

For those that don't know, this book was Tolkien's essay that he wrote between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien refutes the idea that had surfaced in his day that fairy stories were only for children by explaining his own theories on mythopoeia, eucatastrophe, the fae, etc. If you've read the Lord of the Rings then I recommend reading this book as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Work 28 May 2017

Tolkien's essay itself is a marvelous work. But Fleiger and Anderson have done such excellent textual work with the other manuscripts and their commentary on the text that this is a rich resource for anyone looking to discover more about Tolkien's project.
