This is a very short story, with only four chapters, which makes it a very tidy bedtime story. It starts out with Alex wanting to attend the exceptionally special Toffee Makers' party, but being unable to because his stepmom doesn't approve of trick or treating or collecting candy. Alex has to get out of the house, which he does in an imaginative way, and then he does get to attend the party. So far this is fine as a Halloween story, but not very memorable. The party itself is magical and fantastic and the author has fun with candy jokes and puns. Again, perfectly fine. But then, (MILD SPOILER AHEAD), the book takes a turn in an unexpected direction. Alex and the toffee makers go trick or treating to out of the way houses - those occupied by sad or lonely or forgotten people, and treat them, in a most charming way, to a bit of happiness. What was just a fantastical adventure story takes on some weight and honest, understated charm and depth of feeling. Did not see that coming. You wouldn't either from the book description, which is why I wrote this little review. What a nice find and what a step up from, or at least away from, the other Halloween fare. Sneaky. Good.

Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

This new adventure for Alex, as he rides off on a pumpkin to enjoy the Toffee Makers' Halloween Party, will delight young readers and is a great addition to the series. New characters have been added and once again they are imaginatively realised; their adventure on Halloween night fizzes with ghostly sherbet surprises and sticky toffee intrigues. Perfect for bedtime reading, full of 'tricks' and 'treats' and will leave the young readers eagerly waiting for the next adventure to be published. I would have liked it to be a little longer, allowing more character detail at various points in the story.

This is a nice addition to 'The Toffee Makers' book, with characters old and new and plenty of things to get your teeth into - especially at Halloween! My new favourite mode of transport is the pumpkin space-hopper, but the author has such a great imagination, it's hard to choose just one thing to single out from this little story. Children will love this as part of a Halloween celebration, I'm sure!

This book is definitely acceptable for a younger child's Halloween read. I enjoyed it, but I have not read the first book so I am assuming I missed out on some information.
