This 32 Track instrumental CD is a real find. With fantastic sleeve notes from Alan Taylor and Dave Burke giving plenty of info on most of the bands&music featured on the CD. Illustrated with LP sleeve photos, its another great quality CD from ACE.
Its worth the money even if its just for the 10 Eddie and the Showmen tracks showing exactly how surf music should sound. Dick Dale would be proud!
If you only have one 60's Surf & Hot Rod music CD in your collection (personally I dont think you can have enough...)this should be the one.

32 classic surf tracks from the Liberty/Capitol/Imperial stable. An absolutely essential album and worth it for the majestic Casbah. Nelson & Podolor's last work together.

Ok, but nothing particularly memorable about any of the tracks - and I'm a real fan of this type of stuff.

HASH(0x92378f18) out of 5 stars okay, so I'll be the first to review it 8 Mar. 2004
By COMPUTERJAZZMAN - Published on Amazon.com

Do you like surf music? Well, this CD is a reverb-drenched trip down memory lane with some of the most powerful surf music ever made, put out on the Liberty, Capital, and Imperial labels in L.A. from '63-'64. Eddie and the Showmen are great, featuring Eddie Bertrand from the Bel-Airs (Mr. Moto fame). Squad Car is a classic. Jerry Cole was another great studio L.A. musician who put out a lot of surf music on Capital (he was their answer to Dick Dale), who later on went on to back up some pretty fair guys named Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Sandy Nelson was a great drummer, much like Hal Blaine, and the other cuts by the Ho-Dads, the Super Stocks and The Ghouls are pretty good, too. Anyway, if you like pure unadulterated rock and roll, you'll love this CD.

HASH(0x91898cfc) out of 5 stars Sandy Nelson's "Casbah"! 7 Nov. 2008
By Sam Quintin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I chanced upon an Imperial 45 of Sandy Nelson's instrumental "Casbah" some years ago, it showed up in a box of discs I'd bought somewhere, and I was...enamored. When I finally started my CD collection, I couldn't find "Casbah" anywhere (not even on Sandy Nelson compilations).... It was an enigma, it didn't seem to fit... it'd originally been released in that unhip surf-music year of 1965. Leave it to the UK's Ace Records to finally, FINALLY address the continual oversights by discreetly including "Casbah" on their surf-music compilation, TOES ON THE NOSE. If you haven't heard "Casbah" you're in for a treat, it's one of those undiscovered beauties that make collecting rock'n'roll such a thrilling pursuit. You'll be amazed that it wasn't a hit, and that no one seems to be hip to the track. "Casbah" is worth the price of TOES ON THE NOSE alone. It's a rush, and you'll love it. I know so because, hey, I'm not that unique. I envy the discovery that awaits you with your first listen to "Casbah."

HASH(0x91b03d8c) out of 5 stars Yet another surf age compilation you can't afford to miss 28 July 2010
By Martijn13Maart1970 - Published on Amazon.com

Ace did it again, with this wonderful 32! track Cd. The title says it all; packed with surf age instrumentals that are worth to reissue. Needless to say that ACE took care of the sound quality as well as good track information in their usually elaborate booklet. Good news for fans of this music genre who don't want to spend too much on collecting albums from all those separate bands that emerged in the early sixties.

Other surf rock, or surf instrumental compilations I recommend for those who love the surf rock sound are:
ACE RECORDS
The Birth Of Surf, Volume 1 and 2
Big Surf (OOP)
Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals

RHINO
Cowabunga 4CD set (OOP)
Rock Instrumental Classics Volume 5, Surf

Sundaze Records
Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar Volumes 1-4
Rare Surf 1-6

If you buy all those, for sure there will be some overlap, but not a lot. It will be worth it!

Almost forgot to tell: The Vulcanes with Twighlight City (similar to Telstar) is straight away my number one favorite of the Space Age, and I think it is only on this cd available.

This is a great selection of surf tunes, and it's a big diversity in the sounds offered here too...both slow songs and faster ones, if you like surf and want to dig a bit deeper than just the hits this is a great place to start...

HASH(0x974bea74) out of 5 stars Love Surf Music! 23 July 2012

I bought this CD because I wanted to hear Eddie and The Showmen. Did not disappoint - there are 10 songs by them and the rest are good as well. Also, read a review by someone else and that influenced by purchase as well. A great addition to my collection.
