About the Artist

Known as Los Angeles Ambassador of Boogie Funk, Dãm-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: Dame as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early- 80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk. This next phase of the Ambassador s mission: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today s scene with Dãm s own original Modern-Funk compositions for Toeachizown, his debut album

Dam-Funk's sound is a godsend to those of us who love the electro boogie sound of such as Jam and Lewis and the smooth italo soul productions of Mauro Malavasi. It's not just retro-revivalism, though: Dam's innovations on the buttons mean that he is currently the darling of the London broken beats/wonky scene. Right now, he is a one man crusade for this sound. From reading interviews with him, the man has been around the block more than a few times and has really paid his dues - he's late thirties/forties nowadays, but he has been in the music game since childhood - his father worked on classic tracks like that "Misdemeanour" track, and, erm, other disco/soul classics I can't remember! There was a great soundbite in an interview where he said the reason he got out of the hip-hop game was because he was sick of the sight of "guns on the mixing desk". This is not an album for war, it is a blissed-out collection of tracks for headphones and for spending time with that special girl. Every time I put this album on my girl thinks I'm making a hint. It would be false to say that this is a cheesy album; CD1, the vocal side, is particularly deep - Dam's murmered vocals are shrouded in reverb, which made me think of shoegaze bands like Cocteau Twins and even Slowdive! CD2 is a set of instrumentals, and this is the disc I've got more play out of. Strangely enough, the vocal disc is the least accessible of the two.

The criticism this set is open to is its length. Another reviewer has pointed out that it is "too long" and "too samey". The first statement is true - to an extent. Two discs of futuristic production are probably a bit too much to take in one sitting. It is a great set to keep in the car, or on the iPod, so you can move through it at your own pace.

I've been following Dam-Funk since the Burgundy City single, and have bought everything he's released since then. So I was pretty excited that he was putting out a whole double album of his 80s boogie influenced funk. The only problem is that the Dam-Funk sound is quite narrow in scope and spread this far it starts to sound a bit boring. It's such a shame because, there's definitely enough material here to make one great cd, highlights for me include 'searchin for funks future', 'mirrors' and 'hood pass intact'. I still reckon it's worth buying this album, but you might want to make a playlist of the best bits rather than listen to the whole thing

Very very mellow! This is like old school funk mixed with downtempo, soul, early 80's electronics.... There is some good music after all (besides jazz) hidden under mainstream pop/rock garbage they poison us with!!! Dam Funk!!

I first heard of Dam Funk through the Snoopzilla album.

This guy clearly has talent! and knows his funk...

For me though it sounds like a really impressive 'demo' album.
This is because it sounds like he made it his bedroom rather than a top notch studio.

For his next album he should get some really good mixers and engineers to perfect his sound.

But despite this, Ive been playing it a lot and its pretty addictive. Two CDs is good value.
