'Today and now' demonstrates Coleman Hawkins's total control of the numbers he performs. The ballads 'Don't Love Me', 'Love Song from Apache' are mixed with the unstoppable 'Go Li'l Liza, 'Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet','Swingin' Scotch' and 'Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree'.Hawkins takes these numbers in his stride. Cuts loose on 'Grey Bonnet' and has to be faded out, unfortunately, on 'Swingin' Scotch'. Fast or slow tempo. Complete master performances backed by Tommy Flanagan(p),Eddie Locke(d) and Major Holley(b). Mostly recorded in single takes (Sept 9th 1962).

'Desafinado' takes Coleman to a different rhythmic form. Some say a novelty for him. Same personnel as above with a few guitars and additional percussion. Tommy Flanagan plays 'claves' No problems. Getz had ridden this Latin American style with great success. Recorded shortly after the 'Today and Now ' session, Hawkins could blow anything asked. 'Four leaf Clover' and 'I Remember You' are representative of Hawkins and his band. Wonderfully relaxed. Faultless.
The sound and presentation on this Impulse release are superb. Just short of 70 minutes music. Say no more apart from the ultimate saxophonist at bargain price.
