Firstly, this is a fun read. I imagine kids would enjoy it, even if some of the longer words like "nonchalantly" and "colostrum" might take a bit of explaining. The 'Big Adventure' part is actually only a small subsection of the book, which tells more about farmyard life than just goats going on an excursion. I like the easy-going but realistic tone of the book, which fortunately never gets too 'Disney.'
Secondly, I like the educational aspect to the book. Most children probably know that chickens come from eggs and goats eat grass, but extra details such as goats liking weeds, herbs, leaves, that they don't like wind and rain, all show that the author has a genuine fondness for her animals. I even learned a few small things (breed names) which surprised me.
There are a couple of tiny things that stop me awarding this book 5*. I found a few typos - "wooly", "realized" along with some iffy punctuation. I would like a children's book to be 'whiter than white' if they are to learn from it. The cover didn't quite fit the Kindle screen and the photos were rather hard to see or just not very good. These flaws are all minor and wouldn't take much to put right.
If you're looking for some bedtime reading for the kiddywinks, you could do a lot worse. 4/5
This time Billy and Daisy are the 'stars', but Toby does not allow them to enjoy all the attention. Typical of Toby but he is such a lovable doggie that I soon forgave him.
If you are a parent or a grandparent do buy this book for your little ones. It is not just educational but also entertaining. I certainly loved it, and well ... my childhood is gone and will never return.
Bravo Susan Keefe - and when is the next book?
There they meet some of the other inhabitants, two sheep called Rosie and Rambo, and Bubbles the hen, star of The Chicken Patrol (Fantasy Farm Tales Book 2).
Well, despite what people think, life for the animals is never dull. Rambo and Rosie have to be shorn, and we soon discover what characters sheep really are.
Hens can be defiant in their own way too, and Bubbles decides she doesn’t want to nest in the chicken shed, but where will she have her chicks?
As the seasons go by, the goat kids grow into adults, they have many new experiences, including feeling snow for the first time. The world around them is changing, but so are they…
Look out for the surprises at the end!
It is about farm life in general but sees the world from the view of the animals.
Great photos too.
This story introduces young children to the cycle of life, from a goat's point of view.
There are adorable photographs of the goats, which children will love. There are also photographs of sheep, and a photograph of a hen with chicks.
Susan's love of animals is evident in her storytelling.
