This book is fascinating but I found it very irritating. Each "Titan" has their life and times described in manageable chunks, accurately as far as I know. However, I was extremely grateful for the fact you can easily check out the meaning of words because I read it on a Kindle. If I had been reading it as a book and had to look up a dictionary two or three times a page I would have given up after the 2nd chapter. I'm fairly well read but for some reason the author needs to use totally obscure words that the normal person does not understand - frequently. This book should be for the man in the street and the lay-out and the way it is actually written is easily understood but the use of these perplexing words is very annoying. There is no need for it. In every case there are several words that could have been used that would have made the reading experience of this fascinating book far more enjoyable. He has written others but for this reason I won't be buying them

I must say, I used to hate history back when I was at school, so I haven't kept much from all that information we were studying. However, I realised how important and interesting history can be so I decided to get back to it starting from basic stuff. This book was very good for that purpose. It has a bit of everything. For someone who doesn't know much about history (like me) it is quiet informative. It is also an easy read, without many complecated words. However, for someone who knows and and has been reading historical books for years, I think it lacks detail. It is a little bit too general.

Very entertaining mini biography of a whole host of historical characters! The biographical 'Titans' in Montefiore's book range from the great, good, bad and the ugly (the famous and the infamous also included too)!

It's well written, and a treat for those with an interest in history: Montefiore clearly knows his history; I consider a well invested read.

These short (very short) biographies are a little too short. However, where the lesser know figures are concerned, something's better than nothing.

Very informative ( learning lots about people outside my usual areas of interest) and very well written: the author weaves into these mini biographies much valuable context - a real skill given the 3/4 pages devoted to the many characters featuring. Apart from the sheer entertainment value per se, this would be excellent background reading for those aspiring to read history at university and seeking a glimpse of the wider background picture not revealed by the narrow straightjacket of the A Level school syllabus. I certainly recommend this gem of a book.

I loved Jerusalem and bought this book because I thought it might match it in story-telling. I should have been warned off by the title. Does anyone really believe in Titans of history? I got a little tired of the great men idea and gave up.

An eclectic group of individuals - and an interesting "sound bite" on each of them. The book is clearly not intended as a major biography on the subjects - and should not be purchased as such. It's a reference work cum Hors d'oeuvre to tempt the reader, should s/he so wish, to learn more.
