Product Description

Product Description

Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Wagner star in this gripping re-enactment of the tragic 1912 sinking of the Titanic in which over 1,500 people lost their lives. Supposedly an unsinkable ship, the huge British luxury liner met with disaster on its maiden voyage when its captain ignored numerous warnings of impending danger. Though based on facts culled from eyewitnesses, fictional characters depict the men and women, many of them international celebrities, who courageously faced this unexpected tragedy in the icy, bleak waters of the North Atlantic. This tremendously moving and extraordinary film continues to captivate audiences around the world.

From Amazon.co.uk

Jean Negulesco’s 1953 telling of the Titanic story may sometimes get lost behind A Night To Remember and James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic, but it’s got a human core to it that makes it still worth seeking out.

The film is headed up by Clifton Webb, Robert Wagner and Barbara Stanwyck, and the story is, as you might expect, quite familiar. Titanic recounts the demise of the luxury ship as it hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage. It grounds its narrative by centring on a family, who are having no shortage of issues as they eventually set sail. In particular, it’s the relationship between Webb and Stanwyck’s estranged husband and wife that make for some of the film’s best moments.

It’s a bumpy film at times, and A Night To Remember is the better movie. But there’s a lot to admire and like about this also award-winning Titanic, which proves to be a confident piece of filmmaking. The Blu-ray transfer certainly sparkles, impressive given the age of the materials, and the disc, as well as featuring the original trailer, has an interesting feature looking at the history of the Titanic story, against the way Hollywood has told it. That proves to be particularly pertinent where this take on Titanic is concerned.

It’s a good, rounded release, this. An interesting film, a good transfer, and diverting supplementary material, make it worth checking out. --Jon Foster

This is a very beautiful film.

Typically, many would feel that this is about the sinking of the 'Titanic' and the well-documented disaster, but this is much more than this.

A very 'human' story here about a family with 'issues' who get aboard. The husband and father joins the rest of his family unexpectedly, and somewhat unwelcomed, and various problems amongst them ensue.

The outstanding thing about this version of the story, is the fabulous acting from the two leads in particular; Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck and the tremendously talented close-up shots and sequences of the pure and raw emotion.

Before watching this, expect it to be much much more than the drama of the sinking of a great ship and all its tragedy.

Also stars Thelma Ritter and a young Robert Wagner.

A great movie!

This was one of the early movies on this disaster. It is based around a marrige breakup, plus other problems abord ship, very well acted with Clifton Webb,Barbara Stanwyck,Audrey Dalton and Robert Wagner all playing key roles in this top movie.Even though it shows Titanic striking the iceberg on the wrong side and going down intact,as was discovered when Dr Robt.Ballard found the remains of the ship in 1985.Apart from all that this is a top film and fully deserves the five star rating I have given it.

The 1953 "Titanic" has a better script than any other version of the disaster. Performances are excellent, particularly that of Clifton Webb who, as Richard, is quite unlikable- until we see his true character in an incredibly moving scene of love for his heretofore rejected son, as both bravely face death.

I have been waiting (what seems forever) to order this title once I got a region free blu ray player.
Little did I know that this is a region free blu ray or I would have been enjoying this classic many months ago! But the wait was really worth it. I have this movie on Fox's US DVD release that I thought looked okay. Boy, this blu ray is like looking at this movie through new eyes. I cannot get over the detail in the picture! Why can't Fox release this (and Cleopatra) on blu ray in the US? Seems like UK get all the good classics on blu ray. Is My Fair Lady available here on blu ray? Fox/CBS released a horrible blu ray version in the states and would love to "upgrade".
Anyway, back to Titanic. This is not my favorite (A Night to Remember is) on the Titanic subject (too much drama and little history). But still enjoy the great acting by the marvelous Barbara Stanwyck (has she done anything bad?) and the set for this film is awesome. And once again, it is the clarity of this blu ray that really help me to reappreciate this classic all over again.
Can't wait to start my collection of UK blu rays that studios in the states dare not release. Odd Man Out and Double Indemnity are at the top of my list.

This film was a surprise to us - obviously we know the modern version and the Kenneth Moore B&W and this falls somewhere in between. Some interesting back story lines and all the usual pre sinking drama run through it - you'll like some of the characters more than others, but that's pretty much inevitable on any movie. Classic Titanic myths are continued, just as they are in both of the other movies and so you can't help wondering of there is actually an element of truth on them rather than artistic license. SPOILER ALERT - the boat still sinks though, hee hee!!

Love the older black and white movies and this one is no exception, I would rate this as the very best of all the Titanic films I have watched, you know by the two main characters this will be a most enjoyable film.

Lovely older treatment of the doomed ship story (like a Night to Remember with Kenneth More) and far outweighs the modern diCaprio version in my opinion!!
