Surprised to see no five star review here. I do agree with the others that The Great Mass was a tremendous record. Unlike them, I think Titan is even better. Let's face it, is there any band (in metal or in rock) where the orchestrations form such an integral and balanced part of the compositions? Not as a sirupy string section filling up background, but bold melodic outbursts of a full orchestra with motives that get space and time to develop and can even stand on their own. (On the bonus disc of the deluxe edition the group has done exactely that.) The choir arrangements are majestic, befitting the music. Therion comes close, but Septicflesh is much more imaginative, more challenging and avant. And more of a real band than a project. To some Titan might sound pompous. No, subtle it is not, but that is a matter of taste. The riffs and melodies are irresistable, the interplay between orchestra and group unique. I hear no fillers here, just good and even better songs. For me it is all there, including the detailed and beautifully crafted artwork. A full five stars, no less!

First things first - nope this is not as good as Great Mass. Now that's out of the way...

The thing that really comes across in Titan is how...'Symphonic' this album really is. Not in the Nightwish kind of way, it's still got definate brutality that traditional 'Symphonic' metal lacks, but it's also obvious that it was written around the orchestral peices. This is actually to the albums advantage overall, as the orchestra is an integral part of the music and not just tagged on.

This does mean however this is not an immediate album at all, with all the subilities that an orchestra brings, which does dampen the brutality somewhat, but it certainly makes for an intresting listen. Occasionally, ambition seems to have slightly outweighed capability, which leads to some songs such as Burn and The First Immortal lacking in cohesion. the bonus disc of intrumentals is intresting, but doesn't really fit with the tone of the album overall.

By and large, fans will be happy with this album. If you prefer extreme metal to be straightforward, and go for the jugular you may find this album too intreciate, but if you don't mind your extreme metal being tempered with other elements, it's one of the better albums out there of this kind
