This is the best novel I have read for many years. The idea of basing a work of fiction around actual events and famous people of the time is absolutely brilliant and gives added value to both the genres of fiction and factual history. Frank Delaney's style of writing is so comfortable to immerse yourself into, leading to a feeling throughout the story that you are sitting in a comfortable arm chair opposite him, as he has this intimate conversation with you about the life of Charles O'Brien and the other characters in the tale, set within the backdrop of the Ireland of the time. Knowing this part of Ireland very well, I was delighted to see references to many familiar places, particularly little villages and communities still thriving today, rather than the 'action' being concentrated on the big name towns and cities like Tipperary and Dublin. The story is intricate, cleverly interweaved with the enduring influences of many unlikely encounters and events, and utterly compelling in its story-telling. Four main narrators hold our attention throughout a story that pivots around Charles O'Brien; Charles himself, his mother, his dearest friend and a younger man whose adoptive parents are contemporaries of the main players, and whose long-held secret about their son's real identity is revealed at the end of the story, giving the reader shock and joy in equal measure. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and am now preparing the read "Ireland" and "Shannon", both by the same author, with the greatest anticipation. Whether you know Ireland or not, you will find this exceptional book completely absorbing.

Very disappointed! Pages were missing and I was given my money back. They were helpful and apologetic but my feeling is if it is described as being in 'good condition' at the very least your standard should require that a check is made to ensure all pages are in the book.

Frank Delaney rises to the occasion again in this account of the lives of a Tipperary family set amid the turbulent times of the Easter Rising and its aftermath, the Truce and subsequent Civil War. It's a jolly good read and keeps the reader interested from beginning to the end of the story.

"Tipperary" is the entrancing tale of Charles O'Brien, the son of an Anglo-Irish family who devotes his adult life to the healing of the sick, the restoration and preservation of Tipperary Castle and the romantic pursuit of its possible owner, April Burke. Set early in the 20th Century, Charles meets with a collection of figures of Irish history including Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats and Michael Colllins. Although Charles' series of encounters seems to be incredible, it is entertaining. In the course of his exploits, Charles becomes involved in the Irish War of Independence and the following Civil War.
This book is an absolute delight. The dialogue reflects what one would expect to hear in Ireland, at least it reminded me of my cousins from there. Charles' experiences teach the reader much about Irish history. We are introduced to key personalities, the relationship between the Anglo-Irish and the Irish, the importance of Irish Manor Houses in the story of Ireland and a taste of the life lived by the revolutionaries. I found nothing offensive in this book. I enjoyed this book from start to finish and trust that anyone who loves things Irish will as well.
