I didn't like this book at all after reading Tom Bower's ones on Maxwell and Fayed. I didn't like the man or his activities or the writing - I couldn't wait to finish it!

Again Tom Bower hits the button with a well written account of a tycoon whose name is familier but which most people know nothing about. Biographies are not my normal fare but those written by Tom Bower are an exceptional read, very difficult to put down. Recommend reading Branson and The Squeeze both by Tom Boyer and both enlightning.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rebel tycoon 4 May 2013

Loved the book which accurately describes Tiny. I met him a few times in Geneva and Cheapside and was mesmerized by his personal interest in people of all types, backgrounds and ages. He had the most incredibly piercing blue eyes of anyone I had ever met. Wonderfully researched book!

4.0 out of 5 stars A facinating life - ultimately unfulfilled 31 July 2003
By John Vernede - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Bower's supreme strength is his ability to research and shed light on his subject. This skill is especially appropriate for the biography of Tiny Rowland, an individual who elaborately and persistently throughout his life was obsessed with concealing his true identity and ilicit financial dealings. The book is a facinating exposure of a man, famously described as "the unacceptable face of capitalism", from the very start of his business career immediately after the Second World War, his hi-jacking of Lonrho and its expansion in Africa, to a final mamouth struggle for control of House of Fraser with Mohamed Al Fayed.
One would expect to have very little sympathy for an individual for somone whom double-dealing, corruption and character assasination were an every-day aspect of their lives. However, ultimately one is left with a degree of admiration for what the man achieved in his creation of Lonrho, a company which unlike any other UK public company, is associated so much with a single individual. This is especially poignent in the light of the way Lonrho suffered at the hands of collapsing African economies in the 80's, and also embarrasing way he was subsequently forced out of office. One is forced to quote Cecil Rhodes, another giant of Africa; "So much done, so much left undone".
Bower's biography is very well written, impartial, and thouroughly deserves to be back in print.
