This book is just beautiful, I love it! I teach Year 6 children and love using a picture book as a stimulus for writing and this book fits our topic of rainforests and conservation brilliantly. The illustrations are whimsical and inviting, the children loved to look at the pictures closely and spot new details and hidden tin creatures. The audio cd which comes with the book is brilliant too, the music which accompanies the reading really creates the mood and atmosphere reflected in the illustrations. As a read aloud book it's great for kids of all ages, obviously as a text it isn't complex enough for KS2 but it opens up a wealth of writing opportunities for the older children and they have thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book is fantastic. I am a child at St James school and my class has been reading this book. Even though it is aimed at 3-8 year olds my class (of 9-11 year olds) really enjoyed it and we were able to do a lot of work based on it. The imaginative detail and creative description really caught our attention. All my class have really loved this book and we would all highly recommend it.

A wonderful story about the triumph of nature over manmade desolation. A man lives on a rubbish dump and misses seeing the natural world. So he creates a tin forest, which is gradually populated and brought alive by living creatures and plants. My four year old loves this book read to him over and over. His favourite thing is comparing the pictures of the tin forest with the real forest, with every tin animal having its natural counterpart. My favourite thing is the powerful message of renewal, creation and hope.

I am using this book as a Unit of work for my year 3 class.
It is only week one, but the children are loving the topic and we are slowly transforming our classroom into a Tin Forest.
The book itself is very well written and he illustrations are beautiful, especially the colourful forest!

Really excellent book about a man who makes something from nothing. Creates lots of interesting conversations and just reading the first part to a keystage one class would be an excellent story starter. Beautiful language and repetition. Reads like a poem...
