After using it with 7 and 8 year old there was a mixed response. Around half the children really loved joining in and would like to use it regularly whereas the other half really didn't like it and would rather write out calculations. I think part of the problem is that some of the songs seemed a bit 'babyish' to the children but also that some children still need time to work out the answers as they can't recall the facts rapidly enough. Overall I would recommend giving this CD a try as some children will love to learn in this way but it is by no means for everyone.
Luckily, this cd is a very different cup of tea! We felt slightly relieved the moment it started up because at least the person reading the two times table sounded normal. It's hard to make reading the two times table out interesting, admittedly, but at least these weren't read sooooo sllooowwwllllyy that you felt like giving up before you even reached the first song, as happened with our previous cd! As soon as the song for the two times table started up, though, we all started to smile. This cd is a bit of fun - the songs are all in different styles such as blues, rock and reggae and they genuinely do make you want to join in and sing along.
Each table is read out first of all. This is then followed by a song where the table is first of all sung all the way through, then sung again with a gap for the kids to fill in the answer and, finally, sung again but this time the table is all muddled up to test the children. The tables are all written out in the cd insert.
I have to say that this cd has really worked for us because it is lighthearted and fun and has my son singing along without realising that he's working and taking on board his tables. Hurray! Highly recommended!
Each set of times tables is set to a different style of music like jazz and blues etc. Some of the tunes are catchier than others but it is hard I think to make the tables sound interesting.
First a complete set of tables is spoken with the answers. Next comes the song where the child sings along. The song is then repeated without the answers so the child is supposed to shout them out. Lastly come some random times tables from the set which are in a jumbled order to really test a child's knowledge.
I think it's a good way to learn and what I really am thankful for is the little booklet in the CD case which has all the tables written out so my daughter while still learning can read them out and follow the songs to.
The only drawbacks for us are that it goes a little too fast and my daughter finds it hard to think of the answer in time. Also she gets bored after a couple of songs. But I guess that's to be expected. I definitely think she can learn her tables with this CD however. So overall a thumbs up!
The structure for each times table is fairly similar:
Firstly, the times table is read through fairly slowly with the music very faintly playing in the background.
Then, the table is sung through in time to various backing tracks (which are billed as being reggae, rock, country etc. but is in actual fact much like tinny keyboard-style pastiches of style)
Next, the times table is sung through in order leaving gaps for you to shout out the answers and
Lastly, the times table is done out of order and gaps are left for you to call out the answers.
A really good feature is that each stage has a separate track listing, making it possible for you to come in at any stage. So, if you are just learning the table you might want to stick to doing them in order first rather than having to listen to the whole CD in order to get to the part that you want.
The only reason that I have deducted a star is that I felt the sections where the tables are sung out of order, allowing for the child's participation, were very fast and you would have to be quite confident or proficient to keep up. I also thought they could have made more of using various voices which might have been more amusing for kids.
Still, worth buying!

My grandson used the supplied booklet to follow but it was still rather rushed for him especially the test part .Read more
