Given the updates to the app I am updating this review. The good news is many of the bugs I mentioned in my original review have been fixed. (Notably the endless requests to sign up for the trial subscription). However, and it is a big however this is still a very poor offering and the team behind the app have a lot to do and we the consumer deserve better. Specifically:

1. The app doesn't use Whispernet and there is not obvious way to download the latest edition of the newspaper. It is a simple enough scenario - I want to turn on my Kindly Fire HD and either (a) see that morning newspaper or (b) press a button in the app to download now. Instead I'm left loading other apps (to flush the Time app from memory) or turning off the Kindle (again to unload the Times app from memory) or waiting in vain if these fail for the app to recognize todays paper has been published.

2. The app still crashes a lot - the only app ever to crash on my Kindle. "Asphalt 7 has stopped working". I don't care and I don't want to see the error.

3. I want to be able to select how the download works. At the moment the text arrives first and the pictures follow. Makes sense to a developer sat in the office but not to me rushing out the door to catch a train, without the images this is a poor experience. I should be able to select if the pictures `lazy load'. I also want to be able to configure which sections download as standard. On a Sunday morning I have to download each section of the Sunday Times separately. !? Believe it or not I do have other things to do on a Sunday.

4. When you write to me in the app telling me about updates please don't insult me by talking about the about on my iPad. I don't have an iPad I have a Kindle.

With this new April 2016 Times newspaper app, it now appears that most of the technical issues have been addressed. The newspaper now downloads overnight and is ready to read by about 6am. So far, after using for a week, I've experienced none of the old problems of the app freezing or failing g to load content. In fact, it all looks fantastic and you read in portrait or landscape, and also vary the font size.

The text on the app store page says that from January 2013 existing Times subscribers will be able to use this app. News a lot of people have been waiting for, including myself as my wife already subscribes on her iPad & we don't feel we should pay again + the kindle version is more expensive. Have emailed the Times to ask & received a curt response asking for my life history, cats name & date of birth of my great great great grandmother-in-law** when will these corporate process managers realise that customer-facing responses like that don't endear us customers to their company & products. Meanwhile the whole debacle over not being able to use your existing Times subscription on kindle shows yet again how walled garden systems & DRM work against customers. I will not be subscribing via kindle, ever, and will only use the Times app if I can use our existing subscription.

Every time I open an edition I'm asked if I want to start my new free trial whatever I do thereafter takes me round in circles. Very frustrating

Original review - written 7th February 2013

This does not work if you do not have a wifi connection where you want to read the paper. In the old kindle keyboard versions it was possible to download the paper and then later turn on the kindle and read the paper. Try that with this version and the first thing it tries to do is connect to a wifi connection, fails and then refuses to let you have the paper. So if you had any idea that this might let you download a paper at home and then sit on the train, or anywhere else without wifi, and read the paper then save your time because it does not work. It will charge you the money but it won't let you have the paper.

Update - 15th February 2013

Barely a week after writing that it seems to have been fixed. There was an update this morning and it now seems to be able to read without a wi fi connection. Certainly a full shutdown, bringing the kindle back up again in flight mode and then starting the times app allowed me to read and change editions. There may be other changes which have been introduced and there are still a few niggles but the major problem has been fixed. So that change alone changes this from a one star review to a four star review

Whilst the App may be free, the subscription is nearly double that for the iPad. What's worse, you can't use your iPad App log-in. Deleted.

Not the full paper. Great not to have the adverts but no crossword, no sodoku and no tv programmes schedules either. Some articles are truncated. It can be annoying that some articles continue sideways, others are below the page. I suspect it may be better on other devices but its not brilliant on a kindle fire. I doubt I will take out a subscription.
