If I want to look up a place this is the first reference I turn to.
It says 'Comprehensive Atlas of the World' on the cover and that is exactly what it is.
I'm not sure I would suggest this for the average living room bookshelf, but it is extremely comprehensive, including my home town, so I'm happy!
The extra cartographic material about the geology, physical properties, energy, demography, climate and historical cartography as well as the universe are all lavishly illustrated. Finally the index is superb stating not only the page and map reference but also the co-ordinates as well as the old historic names of certain places.
The only things I miss on the maps are major historical/geological sites and some world heritage sites.
Together these two atlases covers all you can ever ask for and they come at a price which is a true bargain. They are worth much, much more! Buy it - you will not regret it!
Seeing year after year that the price of the Comprehensive Edition was above 200 euros in Spain i couldn't believe the price of the big one when i saw it in Amazon UK. Obviously, I bought it.
What can i say about it. It's big and heavy but when you opened the first time, you know that you have something great in your hands. There's nothing i can say about the quality of the maps, you can read very good reviews elsewhere. also it's very remarkable the quality of the printing and binding, they did a very fine and precise job. The slipcase that comes with the book it's very useful.
Believe me that open the atlas on the table, and spending time on the maps it's a real pleasure.
The biggest is called COMPREHENSIVE, costs £70 , is 47x32 cm, has 125 map plates (not pages, as most spread over 2 pages) and a 217-page index.
The next is the CONCISE, costs £41, is 37x27 cm, has 105 plates on 198 map pages, and a 140-page index to 130,000 names. And 32 city maps, which is something the biggest lacks!
The next is the UNIVERSAL, costs £ 26, is 32x27 cm, has 170 pages of maps (not plates - probably 90 plates), an index to 50,000 names, and 32 city maps.
The next is the REFERENCE, costs £16, has 104 pages of maps (not plates - probably 60 plates), an index to 45,000 names, and 46 city maps.
The next is DESKTOP, costs £ 11, 25x19 cm;
then the COMPACT, costs £ 7, 21x15 cm;
then the MINI, costs £ 4, 15x11 cm.
Are those names logical, or what? I don't think so - but I hope this little guide helps. I got myself the CONCISE (that is, number two) and am well-pleased. Beautiful clear mapping, and it just fits into the bookcase; the largest one (that is, THIS ONE) is very beautiful, but will have to live permanently on some large, weight-bearing surface!
