I'm afraid I shall have to disagree with your previous reviewers. The geographical and astronomical section is superb but the maps are a great disappointment. I have compared the 14th edition to my 6th edition. There is a huge difference. The colours of the 6th are superb. The colours of the 14th are dull and dismal, indeed wishy-washy. So much so, for example, that some smaller mountains which are clear in the 6th have virtually disappeared in the 14th. Place names are far less clear in the 14th than in the 6th edition. What has been happening? Is the Times economising on ink? So it's two stars for the geographical and astronomical section and none for the maps. Michael L. Cox

A first class Atlas. The best I've ever seen!
It is a massive and quite heavy tome but to contain all that data it has to be! Worth every penny. Anyone with a genuine interest in geography should own a copy of this book!

This is probably the best overall atlas of the world, and I love it.
I was a bit surprised that the small town Regusse in South France, where I spend my holidays last summer is not on the map (but somewhat larger surrounding cities are).
The index is a major part of the atlas, and perhaps it would be better in a separate volume?
There are some introductory essays on the principles and power of maps and mapping. I would have liked if they were signed, so they could better be cited. By the way, it is stated that a map cannot be neutral, and I agree. But not much is said about the politics and priorities of the present atlas.
I suggest that the major criteria should be: Places I (or other customers) have been or would like to go, or places we would like to look up, because we read about them in the media. That is what I buy an atlas for, and I think this is the best on the market.
Of course my sons (in the 30s and in computer business) think it is old-fashioned because they rely on Google maps. Perhaps when technology and online maps becomes better they will be right, but not for now.

I was in doubt whether to buy the comprehensive or the concise Times atlas. I think Amazon's information could be better for making this decision, e.g. by providing examples of maps that can be compared.
Also: The atlas is delivered in a fine box, but my wife and I agreed that it too inconvenient to take this heavy book out and in of it, so we discarded it.
Concerning neutrality. In opposition to what I wrote above, I now see that the official announcement of this atlas, for example in Amazon, UK, says: "Independent - apolitical and neutral".

Amazing..can't wait to give this to my dad for Christmas. One little tip, buy a magnifying glass. You'll need it for the text even with good eyesight trust me.

An excellent book, all I expected. Colours of the maps are just as in my 1970s University atlas, not 'faded' as reviewed previously. The book does weigh over 5kgs, but is quite manageable to read, especially if on a table.

Bought this book for my son who teaches Geography in one of our top private schools, he loves it. I also purchased a large magnifying glass as some of the smaller detail requires reader to use one, despite perfect eyesight.
