As our oil fired water heater died, we are entirely reliant on the immersion heater for hot water at the moment.
However as it was fitted with an ordinary on/off switch there would be little or no hot water first thing in the morning and it was far too easy to forget to turn it off, which soon starts costing a fortune.
The water heater is now programmed to come on for a half hour before anyone gets up (and while the power is cheaper) and to turn off at several times throughout the day (in case it somehow gets turned on and forgotten). We can also get a 1 or 2 hour 'boost' on demand and not worry about forgetting to turn it off.
The NTT03 fits into a standard pattress box, but it might be a bit of a squeeze if you have a lot of excess wire. There is no Earth connector on this switch, so you might want to have some wire nuts on hand in order to securely connect the earth wires together if there is no earth terminal in the pattress box.
Wiring took ~15-20 minutes, including removing the old switch. The terminals are clearly labeled and the instructions straightforward. The only caveat is that the screws holding the bezel in place have _very_ shallow phillips heads (none of my crosspoints could actually get any grip on them). I had to resort to a small flathead screwdriver to get them in and out or risk stripping the head.
The instructions for setting up the timer are straightforward (pretty much identical to every other unit of this sort that I have ever used) As an added bonus, The display is backlit while in use so it's easy to see what you are doing.Read more ›
It was easy to install; the connections are very robust and offer ample opportunity to get a good grip on the cables!
When I switched the immersion heater circuit back on at the consumer unit, the first thing I noticed was how much less electricity it used, compared to the old electro-mechanical switch. Whilst you could never say that the old switch guzzled electricity, there was a slight but noticeable slow down in the wheel in my meter. However, when I switched the electricity back on after installing this, there was no noticeable speed up of the wheel in the meter.
This brings me to why we replaced it; more than half of the week, we don't need the immersion heater on; so for those days, our water was heated up and went cool without being used. Now we can set four on and off times for each day - so we only need to heat the water on the days we need it!
For us, with definite usage requirements, this was a great advantage, and one that will save us lots on our electricity bills; your mileage may vary.
The unit itself is easy to programme, it has a very bright blue display, and is very versatile. Despite what others have said, it is possible to switch it permanently on, and permanently off.
It's a nice compact unit, is easy on the eyes and on the wallet!
However - I agree with and confirm some of the minor issues with installing it. Faceplate screws are delivered too tight from factory and there is potential to strip the cross head slots if not careful. Overall wiring it up is simple in technical terms - but can be very fiddly and awkward if you have to replace a timer in limited or restricted space. No integral cable ties puts all the pressure on the actual terminals.
I would also like to see manufacturers of such switches making more flexible boost periods. For a 2 person household with a medium sized hot water tank - I only need 30 mins to heat the tank for 2 showers and a bit of washing up. Why not give us a 30 minute boost option to save energy? 2 hour boost seems to be overkill for something marketed primarily as an immersion heater timer.
Still overall a well built and effective product
With up to 4 on /off programs a day, automatic Summer/Winter changeover, and 720 hrs battery back up, this timer is well worth the money
