Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in this time-travelling sci-fi thriller. In Washington, 1994, Max Walker (Van Damme) is an average cop enjoying life with his new wife (Mia Sara). One night she is murdered and the following morning Walker volunteers for a dangerous assignment in a new police department. Ten years later time-travelling is a reality and Walker is a maverick Timecop, going back and forth catching villains all over history. Then the opportunity arises to save his wife when he goes back to 1994 to face a politician who wants to take over the world.
Pay no attention to the fact that Timecop is an insult to intelligent science fiction, and that it gradually succumbs to an acute case of the sillies. It is a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, after all, so check your brain at the door and enjoy this action flick set in the year 2004. Van Damme plays an officer in the Time Enforcement Police, assigned to prevent criminals from travelling to the past with the intent of altering the future. Ron Silver plays the evil politician who plots to retrieve a stockpile of gold from the Civil War to finance his latest campaign. The film is clever to a point, and entertaining if you can ignore the dumb jokes and inconsistencies. Best of all, it's an above-average vehicle for Van Damme (relatively speaking), who gets to kick some villainous butt and share a few scenes with Mia Sara, who plays the Timecop's wife. As Van Damme fans can tell you, this is one of the action star's better movies. -- Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

As for the movie itself, it keeps drawing me back despite its flaws. Its handling of time paradoxes seems vague, almost as if it's a time-travel movie made by people who don't actually find time-travel very interesting. The plot is skeletal. Still, the emotional aspects work despite - or perhaps because of - Van Damme's rather flat portrayal, the narrative drive is not lacking, and the near-future setting has a curious plausibility. Perhaps because of budget limitations, most of the future world is still our old one - actually more likely when you think about it. Some of the B-movie / budget-limited aspects - a time machine that accelerates by spurting rocket flames out the back, for luv's sake - will generate affection or derision, according to your taste. As you will guess, I tend towards affection.
Finally, the James Bond cast-off one-liners ("that had to hurt" after killing a baddy, I mean come on!) and the (deliberately?Read more ›
This ranks in my top 5 Van Damme films.
Van Damme plays the titular character, arresting people who go back in time for profit. A senator is employing people to do this so that he can win in an election. What Van Damme doesn't know, is that because of his meddling, he sent back some bad guys ten years later to kill him and his wife. He got away, you can guess the rest.
so after some trusty brainwaves and other strange stuff that really makes no sense, Van Damme goes back in time to try and save his wife, and not distress her by showing her his new mullet.
The film is very clever, sometimes too clever for it's own good. There are so many good things about the story, in so many points in the film, it's a shame that the narrative let's the side down a little.
In my opinion, Van Damme has never been better in this film (not counting JCVD), and is very well supported by thew rest of the cast. Silver is very slimy as the villain and deserves a good kicking whenever on screen, and Van Damme doesn't fail to deliver in the action stakes.
The set pieces are well thought out and filmed expertly, never making a dull moment in the film. The explanations about the time travel in this film are kept to bare minimum, which is good, as the plot holes are gaping at points.
The effects are not much to write home about, especially at the end.
It's a great movie, which never get5s boring.
well worth catching if you are a sci-fi fan. don't be too proud and avoid this because of the star, you are missing a treat.
It's Widescreen but is non-anamorphic (it will look squashed on your Widescreen TV)
Has only Stereo sound
English Subtitles only
And the Trailer is the only extra.
The picture and sound are good throughout considering, and it can be bought for a penny and postage.
