Review

In 1991, Maeve Haran scored a bestseller with Having It All, one of the first novels to acknowledge the problems of juggling a career and motherhood. Here she seems likely to strike a similar chord with the over-60s . . . Haran is far too skilled a story-teller for the book to read like an exercise in box-ticking. The characters' own liveliness is reflected in a warm and often funny page-turner that strikes just the right balance between melancholy and defiance (James Walton, Readers Digest)

Maeve Haran,sixty-something and author of the ground breaking 1990s blockbuster Having It All has joined the party with this delightful take on the enduring power of female friendship. If 60 is the new 40 then this is the new chicklit . . . a funny, feisty novel (The Daily Express, Caroline Jowett)

This book is just right for a relaxing holiday read. It is a good, fat book so you can really enjoy getting into it. The things that happen to the 4 friends are a bit cliched but who cares? It is well written and you want to keep turning the pages. Highly recommended. As another reviewer said I would like another book to find out what happens to everyone.

As a fan of Maeve Haran's books this is by far the best, from page one I was hooked, just couldn't put it down, loved the character ' s & couldn't wait to find out how each one developed through each brilliant written page. The only down side is that I've finished it !!! Would love to know what happens next for the four friends & their families !!

Being able to identify with all four characters and the things that happened to them in later life, I can say that it hit the nail on the head for 'older age' scenarios, with children, husbands, money and parents. However, if was rather light in places when dealing with serious and heart-rending issues - I think a separate book could have been written for each of the four leading ladies. I really did enjoy it, though, and will recommend it to my peers.

Now comes the BUT (stop reading for a spoiler)

The end was quite ludicrous and badly executed. I'm sure it was difficult to avoid a clichéd happy ending for them all, but for heavens sake, it collapsed into uncharacteristic farce.

A new Maeve Haran! And one that continues her role of adopting issues of the time that affect women and families, dissecting them and presenting problems and sometimes, solutions. I've been reading Haran since her early novels that dealt with women trying to combine paid work and family responsibilities in the 1970s. This new novel takes us into the 2000s where Haran's characters have left behind the angst of women in their thirties and are dealing with "late middle age". Friends who met at university forty years before, now have to deal with ageing, although one is described as having "worn best" - never having had a husband or children "to wear her out". On the other hand, she is thought to be "trying too hard". All are having to face technological change which affects the way in which they do their work and the competition they face from young experts (at least with technology!). I found that the novel was certainly topical and easy to read, dealt fairly convincingly with the issues faced by the women and demonstrated Haran's ability to take topical issues and turn them into accessible fiction. Perhaps I should have felt more at home with the characters, but at times felt that they took their age too seriously and their lack of facility with the internet surprising. However, Time of Their Lives is well worth reading and an inspiration for women in their sixties who haven't yet been lured to the internet and become at home with its multiple uses.

I picked this up just as i turned 60, thinking I had better think a bit about the next stage of life (though I personally don't feel much different from 10 years ago). It's a simple, uncomplicated read, not trying to be anything but light entertainment, but readable enough. I must admit that as i went on I felt the book was just designed to describe every possible crisis situation women of this age group are likely to meet: birth, death, divorce, betrayal, new relationships, moving house, losing jobs, trying new jobs, breast cancer... hardly convincing that any group of four friends would between them face all these things within the space of a few months! So plot-wise it's rather overloaded and unconvincing - you find yourself wondering what life-shaking event lies on the next page!

Despite all this, I did find myself enjoying the book and taking an interest in the characters' reactions. It may be a good distraction if you have time to fill in.

A totally joyful read, wanted to keep on reading, yet also wanted to savour it. An unusual book as it's about 4 women in their 60's ( Hurrah, About time too) Approaching 60 myself , I want to read about women around my age who are still shopping in Zara and Topshop, young at heart but starting to age gracefully. The four life long friends are exactly the type you want to be amongst, I felt really sad when I had finished it and desperate for more.

An easy read is probably the best I can say....a group of women friends of 60+ (years) and what is happening to all them - cancer, betrayal, memory failure...it has it all with everything neatly rounded off...as if....
Only for those who like happy ever after books

For me it was a vaguely entertaining book about a 60 plus group of friends.
Parts of it irritated me especially the breast cancer plot line brought in to create cheap emotion and hysterical humour.
Also a young Polish man becoming the perfect houseguest/carpenter living rent free with one of the older ladies--totally unbelievable.
