Review

"Ian Mortimer is among the best: a conjuror who is always bright, engaging and well-informed… Mortimer’s book pitches us headlong into the broiling maelstrom of late 17th-century everyday life in all its variety and strangeness… Any tour of late 17th-century Britain is guaranteed to be exhilarating. And with Mortimer in charge, one always travels first class" (John Adamson Mail on Sunday)

"Ian Mortimer is a historical truffle hound… He has already made two of these “time traveller” excursions – to medieval and Elizabethan times. Both books were Sunday Times bestsellers, and there is every chance this new one will be too. The Time Traveller’s Guide to Restoration Britain is just such fun to read… Mortimer writes about all of this with real freshness and enthusiasm, as well as a dogged attention to contemporary sources… Brimming with such gems, his book is a delightful read." (Andrew Holgate Sunday Times)

"This entertaining tourist guide brings the late 17th century alive…The latest Time Traveller’s Guide will entertain and inform anyone with an interest in this extraordinary period" (Andrew Taylor The Times)

"Mortimer composes his vivid mosaic of life between 1660 and 1700 through the fancied experience of a time traveller" (Christopher Howse Sunday Telegraph)

"Ian Mortimer manages to inform and delight in equal measure" (Sue Baker Bookseller)

A shunning overview of the late seventeenth century, imagined as if we were tourists planning to stay there. Absolutely fascinating and all the facts presented in a thoroughly entertaining way Another tour de force from Mr. Mortimer. However, I think I will stay in the twenty-first century, thanks very much!

An excellent addition to the series, which is both extremely informative and entertaining to read. The material is dealt with is such a way as to fill one with information without the risk of one's feeling 'force-fed'. An admirable book.

I have read the others in the series that Ian Mortimer has written and they are all excellent. Very readable, full of astonishing facts. His research is very extensive but he writes in such an accessible way that it makes for very easy reading. Highly recommended.

Fascinating book. Fun, too. Extremely well researched but a book that wears its learning light and so is as readable as a good historical novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to any student of history or intelligent general reader.
